Jacks sweep Mastodons, Woods picks up 400th career win

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State had a big weekend as the Jacks won three Summit League games over Purdue Fort Wayne at Jackrabbit Stadium.

Not only did SDSU’s seniors get to celebrate Senior Day on their home field on Saturday, the doubleheader sweep – 10-6 and 5-2 – gave Jackrabbit head coach Krista Wood 400 career wins.

State capped off the weekend with a 6-4 win over the Mastodons on Sunday to improve to 8-4 in league play and 29-12 on the season.

The Jacks play host to Creighton on Tuesday in a pair of nonconference games. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

Sunday’s Game

• South Dakota State 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 4

The Mastodons got on the scoreboard with a single run in the first inning, but SDSU answered with four in its half of the frame with Yanney Ponce coming through with a two-out, three-RBI triple.

Purdue Fort Wayne used a walk and three hits to plate three runs and tie the game at 4-4 through 1 1/2.

The Jacks took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the second as Peyton Daughtery singled with one out; advanced to second on a wild pitch; and then, scored on Megan Rushing’s two-out single.

SDSU added a run in the third when Mallory McQuistan and Lyndsey Crist opened the frame with back-to-back walks before Ponce’s single scored McQuistan for the 6-4 lead.

Taylor Compton picked up the win in relief after giving up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of work. Emma Hardin earned the save with two outs in the seventh, which included a strikeout.

Saturday’s Games

Game 1

• South Dakota State 10, Purdue Fort Wayne 6

SDSU took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Mastodons scored three in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage.

The Jacks answered with three in the bottom of the third before tacking on three more in the fourth for a 7-3 lead.

Purdue Fort Wayne closed to within 7-5 with two in the fifth, but SDSU matched them with two of its own in the bottom before adding one more in the sixth to go up 10-5.

The Dons scored once in the seventh for the final margin.

McQuistan drove in four runs with three hits while Ali Herdliska missed the cycle by a triple as she plated two runs with a single, double and home run. Ponce also knocked in a pair of runs with two hits.

Kendra Conard took the win in the circle after allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Compton earned the save with 2 1/3 innings of relief after giving up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.

Game 2

• South Dakota State 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 2

The Dons scored  a pair of runs in the second inning on three hits, but SDSU tied the game with two in its half when Crist hit a solo home run and Ponce followed up with a triple, before scoring on a throwing error.

Ponce drove in two more runs in the third with a bases-loaded double to make it 4-2, SDSU.

Crist’s second home run of the game in the fifth provided for the final margin.

Hardin picked up the win as she gave up four hits and struck out four in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Notes (From SDSU SID) – Herdliska now has 11 home runs on the season, tied for fourth-most in a single-season at South Dakota State. ... Compton became the school’s all-time leader in career saves (seven) with the game one finish, breaking a tie with Madison Hope. ... Wood now has 400 career wins after the doubleheader sweep. She is 130-128 all-time at South Dakota State after going 270-154 over eight years at Wayne State College. ... Crist is alone in fourth in the Jackrabbit record books with 22 career home runs.
