Jacks tally 16 PRs, 6 Top-Three Finishes in Cali

On the first day of competition in California, the South Dakota State track and field team did not disappoint.

They recorded 16 personal-best marks throughout the day with six top-three finishers and one event winner.

Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, Calif. – Highlighting all of the Jackrabbit excitement was Rachel King, who posted her fifth school record during the 2018 indoor/outdoor campaign. She competed in the 5,000-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational, competing in section one. 

Her mark of 16:09.54 resets the school record, improving it by 6.94 seconds. The mark ranks 21st in the NCAA.

Evan Hieber and Vanessa Lane recorded their first multi-events of the 2018 season.

Hieber posted his personal-best score in the decathlon, which is seventh on the school’s all-time list. He also managed five more personal-best marks and won the javelin throw.

Hieber sat in eighth place (3,287) out of 14 competitors after Day 1 of competition at Cougar Stadium.

He started off the competition with his first 100 dash of the season, second in his career. His time of 11.95 was just 0.05 seconds away from personal-best mark.

Later in the afternoon, Hieber recorded a second-place finish of 41 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the shot put with an outdoor PR.

The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also posted a 6-1.25 in his first outdoor high jump of the season, just two inches from his outdoor personal-best height set in the 2017 Howard Wood Relays.

Hieber wrapped up Day 1 with his second personal-best mark out of five events. His 400 mark of 52.52 placed him in eighth place and beat his previous-best by 11.33 seconds.

Day 2: Hieber finished off the decathlon by recording three personal-best marks.

He notched a PR in the discus, beating his previous mark by 14 feet, 7 inches; in the pole vault by 2 feet, 5 1/2 inches; and the 1,500 by 1:43.87.

He was three inches short of beating his season-best mark in the javelin, but still won the event out of the group.

His decathlon score was also a career-best, which goes down as the seventh-best all-time.

Lane posted PRs in two events and another three season-best marks while scoring her second-highest score in the heptathlon.

Lane concluded Day 1 of her first multi-event of the 2018 outdoor season at fifth (3,037) among 17 other competitors.

She led off by setting a personal-best in the 100-meter hurdles  in 14.39, beating her 2015 outdoor championship time by 0.21 seconds.

Then she recorded a season-best mark by 2 3/4 inches in her third attempt at the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 1 /34 inches. 

Lane set her second career-best outdoor mark in the shot with a put of 41-7. beating her previous-best from the 2017 outdoor league championships by four inches. It’s her best mark in the event during 2018 so far.

The Pequot Lake, Minn. native set a season-best time in the 200 (25.13), finishing second and just missing her outdoor and overall PR by 0.01 seconds.

Day 2: Lane posted a season-best throw in the Javelin by 3 1/2 feet and recorded her first 800 of the outdoor season.

She finished in the third place in group 2 of the Bryan Clay Invite with a score of 5,029 points which is her second-highest point total in the multi.

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. – The last event of the evening, which was the first event the Jacks were in at the Mt. SAC Relays, created some top-10 shuffle in the SDSU record book.

 Chase Cayo and Trevor Capra recorded their personal-best marks in the 10,000-meter run, moving their names among SDSU head coach Rod DeHaven. Cayo moved just ahead of DeHaven into fourth place and Capra sits 0.05 seconds behind in sixth place.

 Pacific Coast Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. – At the Pacific Coast Intercolligate, where most of the Jackrabbits competed on Thursday, seven of the personal-best marks and all six of the top-three finishes were recorded.

Miatta Flemister-Smith posted two personal-best marks, which moved her name up the school’s top 10 lists on both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Bryant Courter recorded the lone Jackrabbit win of the day in the long jump while tying his outdoor personal-best mark. Daniel Clarke wasn’t too far behind, finishing in third place and recording a school top 10 mark as well.
