James F. Johnson, 64, died on Friday, June 9, 2017, at his residence in Brookings, surrounded by his family.  

Memorial services are at 11 a.m. today at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

 James was born on Jan. 10, 1953, in Brookings, the son of Marvin and Doris (Brelsford) Johnson.  He received his education in the Volga schools.  

He married Sherri Anderson on Dec. 30, 1975, in Brookings.  Jim was employed at various places in Brookings including South Dakota State University grounds department and custodian, and later at the Brookings County Courthouse.  In 2001, he continued his education at S.E. Technical Institute in Sioux Falls as a heavy equipment operator.  For the past 12 years, he was employed at 3M in Brookings, retiring in 2015 for health reasons.

Jim loved to hunt, fish, watch old western movies, drag racing, tinkering on old car engines, hockey and the Yankees.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchild.  

Jim and Sherri celebrated 46 years together on June 8, 2017.

He is survived by his wife Sherri of Brookings; his children Jamie (Julienne) Johnson of Bryant, Heather (Corey) Ridgway of Brookings, Ashley (Brian) Moe of Artesian, Steven Johnson of Brookings; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild and his mother-in-law Nette Anderson of Elkton.

   Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law Marlen Anderson.
