Jane Mast, 92, of Volga, died Monday, June 4, 2018, at the Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2018, at the First Lutheran Church in Volga. Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to services.  Burial will take place immediately following the funeral service at Trinity Cemetery in Volga.  Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jane Mast was born May 29, 1926, to Dauwe and Rena (Alger) Bajema of Friesland, Netherlands.

Before immigrating to America at age 10, Jane attended primary school in Woudsend,  Netherlands.  She completed 12th grade in Artesia, California.

Jane met John Mast when he was on Army leave in California, where they married in Bellflower Christian Reformed Church on VJ Day, Aug. 14, 1945.  They moved to the farm near Volga where Jane lived for 70 years until entering the United Living Center in Brookings in April, 2015.

Jane was a busy homemaker and dedicated mother and she worked full time in retail sales in Brookings, until her retirement.

She also worked as a model home associate while spending winters in California.

Jane was a member of First Lutheran Church in Volga and was active in Sunday school and Women’s Circle, helping serve many church dinners and coffees. She was a member of Brookings Extension Club and took art classes at SDSU.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, fashion design and sewing.  She was a current events fanatic and keen observer of humanity.

She delighted in art, music, and drama,  particularly as she viewed the talents of her many children.  Above all, Jane enjoyed God’s natural creation around her – sunny days, stormy days, and colorful skies and flowers.  Despite considerable physical pain in her later years, Jane enjoyed her life, delighted in her family, and tried to live always according to God’s intention for her.

Survivors include eight children: Dr. John David (Kathy) Mast of Tracy, California, Rosella (Jeff) Deardorff of  Chicago, Cynthia Maher of Novi, Michigan, Daniel (Diana) Mast of Tracy, California, Philip Mast and Barb, of Brandon; Marsha (John) Van Prooyen of Cape Coral, Florida, Kevin Mast of Volga, and Sherry Mast of Santa Rosa, California;  13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters: Trudi Kooiman and Alice Van Esch of California, Julie Smith of Washington , and Rhea Davis of Nevada; and two sisters-in-law,  Clara Mast of Volga and Ruth Mast of Denver.

Jane was preceded in death by a 2-year-old son, Darrell; her husband, John; two sisters,  Beatrice Bajema and Lillie Bakker, and brother, Klass Bajema.
