Janet Louise Johnson, 69, died Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Riverview Healthcare Community in Flandreau. 

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with burial in First Presbyterian Cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service.

Janet was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Flandreau to Edward and Beatrice (Heminger) Hansen. She attended Flandreau High School and completed her associate’s degree from Dakota State University. Janet married Berle Johnson on Nov. 13, 1970. 

Janet was employed at the Flandreau Indian School and also worked as a drug and alcohol counselor in Flandreau for several years, supporting many members of the community in their recovery from addiction. 

She worked in management at the Royal River Casino for many years and eventually became co-general manager. 

She took great pride in her work at Royal River and was also an active member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. 

From childhood on, Janet loved sports and outdoor activities. She was an All-State softball player and also enjoyed golfing, bowling, and gardening. 

She loved her Chihuahua Jose, who was her faithful companion and partner in crime for many years. Janet’s pride and joy was her immediate and extended family, and she was fiercely protective of her loved ones.

Janet is survived by three children, Stephanie (Jeff) Danielsen of Watertown, Amy Olinger of Flandreau, and Matthew Johnson of Scottsdale, Arizona, seven grandchildren; her father Ed Hansen of Flandreau; her brothers, Ed Hansen Jr. and Wesley Hansen, all of Flandreau and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her mother Beatrice “Peaches” Heminger and three sisters, Joyce, Judy, and JoAnn.
