Janice L. Kampmann of Elkton, died on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, at the age of 65, after a short intense bout with cancer. Janice was born on Feb. 24, 1954, to Marvin and Marilyn (Stoltenberg) Oppelt.
She grew up on the family farm in a large, loving family with three sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Elkton High School and Nettleton Business College. On August 4, 1973, Janice married Douglas Kampmann, and they celebrated 46 years of marriage before her passing. Early in their marriage, they spent three years in Oklahoma before returning to South Dakota in 1976, where they raised their own four children on the same family farm near Elkton where Janice had grown up. Janice worked part time as a typesetter at the Elkton Record newspaper for 13 years while raising their family, before taking a position as a secretary at South Dakota State University, where she remained for six years.
She then worked as a secretary for the Dean of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences and the SDVMA, where she worked for another 24 years. Janice had been enjoying her recent retirement from SDSU, but not being one to sit idle, she had recently begun a new part time position with the City of Elkton, still leaving time for some traveling, gardening, golfing, classes, and crafting, but most importantly, spending time with her family.
Janice was passionate about her family, making it a priority to spend quality time regularly with her husband, siblings, mother, children, and grandchildren.
The grandkids will forever cherish memories of their weekends at Grandma’s house, with all the special projects and activities that Janice planned for their stay.
As a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed, Janice was devoted to her church and her community, serving on a variety of committees and sharing her musical talent as an assistant organist/pianist at Trinity. She was a member of Ladies Aid and an active member of the Elkton community, always willing to help and give time where needed.
Janice leaves behind her husband Douglas Kampmann; children Jennifer (Mark) Fuoss, Armour; Brian (Adria) Kampmann, Mitchell; Cheryl (Tom) Nadgwick, Gettysburg; and David (Christina) Kampmann, Sioux Falls; mother Marilyn Oppelt, Brookings; brother Kenneth Oppelt, Sioux Falls, sisters Helen (Curt) Sterud, Brookings; Carol (Ken) Jongeling, Oklahoma City; Joyce (Tom) Kepford, Brookings; and grandchildren Krista Krell, Daniel, Corbin, and Makayla Fuoss, Kate and Andrew Kampmann, Johanna and Jessica Nadgwick, and Parker and Ian Kampmann, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Marvin Oppelt, brother Ivan Oppelt, and brother-in-law Dennis Kampmann.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday, August 30, 2019 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elkton, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Elkton.
