BROOKINGS – In conjunction with Woodbine Productions’ Sunday presentation of Big Band Holidays featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, area high school and college instrumental musicians are being offered a rare opportunity.

Students will attend master classes with select ensemble members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at South Dakota State University on Sunday.

“We are exceptionally fortunate to be able to host this caliber of musician on campus and in our community,” said David Reynolds, director of the School of Performing Arts. “As part of the residency, we have scheduled instrument specific master classes for our students in the SDSU Jazz Ensembles and are pleased to open the master classes to area students who have an interest in jazz or concert band and are actively playing in their school ensembles.”

Master classes are being offered on trumpet, trombone, alto sax, tenor sax, and drum set.

While no fee is being charged for the master classes, students do need to be registered in advance, will need to bring their own instrument (except drum set) and be prepared to participate in the master class specific to their instrument.

Phone calls may be directed to the School of Performing Arts at 688-5187 or by emailing david.reynolds@sdstate.edu. The master classes will last one hour, offered at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, and participants should plan to arrive by 3:10 p.m. The master classes are not open to the general public; however, parents or guardians are welcomed to observe.

Woodbine Productions is a concert series held in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center that benefits the SDSU School of Performing Arts Scholarship program. A project of the SDSU Foundation, the series is fully underwritten by an anonymous benefactor wherein every dollar of every ticket sold to a Woodbine concert goes directly to the music scholarship fund.

A limited number of tickets remain for the Sunday evening concert and can be purchased online at www.woodbineproductions.com For more information, contact the School of Performing Arts at 688-5187.
