John Steen, 81, of Sioux Falls, died surrounded by his family on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

John was born April 24, 1936, in Brookings and graduated from Brookings High School in 1955.  He entered military service with the United States Army in 1958 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1962.  

Following his military service, John returned to Brookings to earn a bachelor’s degree in economics from SDSU in 1966.  John was an avid and skilled golfer and enjoyed a career in the banking industry that spanned over 30 years.  On Dec. 23, 1972, he was united in marriage to Christl Schell, of Germany, in Brookings.  John was a beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all.  

John is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Christl; two sons, Eric (Angela) Steen and their children Avianna, Erika, and Ayden of Sioux Falls; and Jason Steen of Sioux Falls; his brother, Rueben (Mary Alice) Steen of Brookings; sister, Betty Wegner of Boise, Idaho; sister-in-law Donna Steen-Wallum of Brookings; and 27 nieces and nephews. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lena Steen; his infant son, Darin; three sisters and five brothers.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec, 30, at First Congregational Church in downtown Sioux Falls.  The family requests that memorials be directed to First Congregational Church or the American Red Cross.
