Junior varsity boys go 1-0-1 in league play, girls 1-1

JV BOYS

The Rangers tied the Lakers 1-1 Friday in Watertown and then beat Mitchell 3-1 at home Saturday.

 Brookings 1, Watertown 1

Kane Kurtenbach’s unassisted goal 2:59 into the third knotted the score at 1-1.

That’s where it stood for the rest of regulation and through the 10-minute overtime period.

The Lakers scored 1:45 into the third.

Brookings outshot Watertown 43-16, including 14-0 in overtime.

The Rangers’ Kaden Gutormson made 15 saves.

 Brookings 3, Mitchell 1

Isaac Schulte netted the game-winner with 9:20 remaining and Trevor Pederson added an insurance goal with 4:38 to play.
Kane Kurtenbach opened the scoring 2:14 into the game. It was tied at 1-1 after a period.

The Rangers outshot the Marlins 38-22.

Kaden Gutormson picked up the win between the pipes, stopping 21 shots.

JV GIRLS

The Rangers won 4-0 at Watertown on Saturday but lost 7-2 to Yankton at home Sunday.

 Brookings 4, Watertown 0

The Rangers held a 36-17 advantage in shots, as Marina Gerstner made 17 saves to earn the shutout victory.

Kiran Vugteveen got things going with a goal midway through the first. Taylor Hokenson assisted.

Jadyn Kuehl doubled the margin with 3:55 left in the second, with Vugteveen and Jayda Geraets picking up assists.

Vugteveen’s second goal made it 3-0 just 9 seconds into the third. Shoup lit the lamp on Vugteveen’s assist 5 minutes later to provide for the final margin.

 Yankton 7, Brookings 2

The Gazelles outshot the Rangers 42-18 and put up a four-spot in the opening period.

Kiran Vugteveen scored two goals in the second – the latter was assisted by Jadyn Kuehl – but Yankton was up 5-2 heading to the third.

Jadyn Runge made 34 saves and allowed five goals in 41:03 of game time. Heidi Merriman stopped two of the three shots she faced over the final 9:57.

BANTAM A

The host Rangers went 1-2 in pool play and then beat Sioux City 5-1 in the third-place game of the Dakota Premier Classic over the weekend at Larson Ice Center.

Friday

 Brookings 3, Marshall 2

The Rangers built a 3-0 lead heading to the third period and then held on.

Jacob Peterson lit the lamp with 9:07 to go in the first. Owen Schneider was credited with the assist.

Peterson scored again with 10:14 left in the second and Zach Struck found the back of the net 4 minutes later. Jacob Kahle assisted on the first tally and Peterson and Schneider on the second.

Egan Jensen made 19 saves to pick up the win in goal.

Saturday

 Hutchinson 7, Brookings 2

Owen Schneider scored midway through the first period.

Minnesota knotted things up 46 seconds into the second, before Jacob Peterson found the back of the net on assists from Owen Schneider and Ren Jacobsen to make it 2-1 with 12:58 showing on the clock.

However, the Minnesota team grabbed a 4-2 lead after two periods and added three more goals in the third.

Egan Jensen stopped 31 shots.

 Fairmont 8, Brookings 7

The Minnesota club outscored the Rangers 4-3 in the third period to win a wild pool-play matchup.

Owen Schneider and Zach Sturck both tallied hat tricks. Jacob Peterson added Brookings’ other goal.

Garrett Bothe and Jack Merritt each dished out two assists, while Schneider, Jacob Kahle and Gage Peterson contributed one apiece.

The Rangers led 2-1 after a period and it was tied at 4-4 through two.

The third-period scoring was back-and-forth – Fairmont 13:18, Brookings 8:07, Fairmont 5:06, Brookings 4:05 – leaving the score at 6-6, before the visitors took a two-goal advantage by scoring at 3:39 and :39.

Brookings provided for the final margin with 13 seconds to play.

Sunday – Third place

 Brookings 5, Sioux City 1

Trailing 1-0 after a period, the Rangers netted four goals in the second to seize control.

Owen Schneider, Jacob Peterson (from Jacob Kahle), Zach Struck (Garrett Bothe) and Ren Jacobsen (Jack Merritt) each scored in the big stanza.

Struck added a goal on assists from Schneider and Jacobsen in the third.

Egan Jensen made 19 saves.

BANTAM B

The host Rangers went 0-3 in pool play before blasting Watertown 10-0 in the seventh-place game of the Dakota Premier Classic over the weekend at Larson Ice Center.

Friday

 Brandon Valley 4, Brookings 1

Cooper Deatherage scored in the second period for the Rangers, who trailed 2-0 after one.

Goalie Nathan Brecher made 33 saves.

 Worthington 9, Brookings 4

Cooper Deatherage scored on an assist from Derrick Eischens and Koen Beinhorn added a goal to put the Rangers ahead 2-1 after a period.

However, Worthington scored four goals in each of the next two stanzas.

Deatherage added a third-period goal and assisted on Jordan Raatz’s tally.

Nathan Brecher stopped 30 shots.

Saturday

 Fargo 7, Brookings 3

The North Dakota club built a 5-1 lead after two.

Jack Lee scored twice for the Rangers and Andrew Sternhagen added a goal. Cooper Deatherage and Spencer Heflin assisted.

Nathan Brecher recorded 41 saves.

Sunday – Seventh place

 Brookings 10, Watertown 0

Jordan Raatz scored four times and added an assist as the Rangers dominated the Lakers.

It was 5-0 after a period and 7-0 through two.

Cooper Deatherage contributed three goals.

Jacob Law, who dished out an assist, Derrick Eischens and Jack Lee also scored. Aidan Austreim added an assist.

Nathan Brecher posted the shutout between the pipes, stopping seven shots.

PEEWEE A

The Rangers blasted the Lakers 6-0 in their league opener Saturday in Watertown.

Parker Nielson and Talon Hyde both lit the lamp twice in the first period.

Jackson Heller found the back of the net in the second and Jay Harris scored on Nielson’s assist in the third.

Ryder Anderson made 23 saves to tally the shutout win. Braden Dobesh was noted as a defensive standout.

PEEWEE C

The Rangers hit the road to beat Watertown 4-1 on Saturday and Oahe 8-4 on Sunday.

 Brookings 4, Watertown 1

Emerson Cramer scored on an assist from Gavin Loy in the first period; Andrew Hahn lit the lamp with 13 seconds left in the second; and Hahn found the back of the net again 1:14 into the third on assists from Keygan Peterson and Ashton Baker to put the Rangers ahead 3-0.

Micah Zweibahmer added a goal with 3:05 left. Hahn and Garrett VanderWal were credited with assists.

Mathew Bothe made 15 saves.

 Brookings 8, Oahe 4

Andrew Hahn recorded a natural hat trick and Tryston Hostler tallied a playmaker

The Capitals led 2-0 5 1/2 minutes into the game, before Brookings answered with six consecutive goals.

It was 2-2 after a period.

Jameson Hunter scored with 6:08 left in the second to put Brookings on top for good at 3-2.

Hahn’s natural hat trick came with goals at 5:19 and 2:56 of the second and 14:39 of the third to make it 6-2.

All three of Hostler’s assists came in the decisive middle period.

Ashton Baker, Keygan Peterson, Micah Zweibahmer and Connor Buckley also scored goals.

Hahn, Zweibahmer, Peterson, Camden Reicks and Chasen Kastner tallied assists.

Jamison Olson stopped 18 shots between the pipes.
