Junior varsity boys go 2-1; PeeWee A team wins Dakota Premier Classic

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Rangers posted a 2-1 record over the weekend with wins over Sioux Center and Oahe before losing for the first time this season as the hands of Fremont.

On Friday, Brookings defeated the Storm, 7-1, at Larson Ice Center before downing the Capitals, 9-1, on Saturday on the road. But the Flyers proved to be too much as the Rangers fell, 4-1, at LIC on Sunday.

Brookings is at Yankton on Friday and plays host to Boji on Sunday.

 Brookings 7, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers led 2-1 after a period as Jack McCarty found the back of the net at the 13:21 mark off assists by Luc Bouchard and Charlie Marshall before Jordan Svobodny tallied an unassisted goal with 10:30 left in the period.

Brookings added three goals in the second – the first an unassisted score by Dylan Park; the second by Svobodny; and the final one by Carter Merritt. Trevor Pederson picked up the assist on the last two.

The Rangers tacked on two more in the third as McCarty scored off a Bouchard setup and Merritt notched an unassisted goal.

Philip Kuechenmeister earned the win in goal.

 Brookings 9, Oahe 1

The Rangers put up five first-period goals; scored just one in the second; and then, added three more in the third as they dominated play by outshooting the Caps, 46-12, as Kaden Gutormson stopped 11 shots for the win between the pipes.

Kobe Ischen’s goal, off a McCarty assist, less than five minutes in started the onslaught as Brookings scored three goals in less than a minute. Jamison Honkomp scored next off a setup by Alec Rice before Park pushed the lead to 3-0 off a Bouchard assist.

Dalton Rittershaus scored off another McCarty assist and then, Kane Kurtenbach sent the Rangers into the first intermission up five as Merritt picked up the assist.

Kurtenbach set up Merritt for the only goal of the second period as Brookings led 6-0 through two.

Kobe Hai found the back of the net to open the third-period scoring for the Rangers as McCarty earned a playmaker with Noah Ronning assisting, as well. Kurtenbach then scored off assists from Svobodny and Park before Nick Jonas provided for the final margin off another Merritt setup.

 Fremont 4, Brookings 1

After a scoreless first period, Ischen scored with 6:53 to play, but the Flyers scored twice for a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.

Fremont tacked on two more insurance goals as the Flyers held a 30-20 edge in shots with Kuechenmeister finished with 26 saves in the loss.

14U GIRLS

The Rangers dropped to 1-2 on the season after dropping a 7-3 decision to Watertown on Saturday. Brookings travels to Huron to face the All-Stars this Saturday.

 Watertown 7, Brookings 3

Savannah Barber netted an unassisted goal 38 seconds into play before the Lakers scored once to send the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Barber added two more unassisted goals but Watertown scored four times to lead 5-3 through two.

The Lakers tacked on two more goals in the third for the 7-3 win as Heidi Merriman finished with 20 saves in the loss.

PEEWEE A

The Rangers posted a 4-0 mark to win their division of the Dakota Premier Classic Tournament over the weekend at Larson Ice Center.

On Friday, Brookings opened with an 10-0 win over Watertown and then, on Saturday the PeeWee A team beat Mitchell, 9-3, and Boji, 5-1, to advance to Sunday’s title game, where the Rangers won a rematch with Boji, 4-1.

Sunday’s Championship

 Brookings 4, Boji 1

Owen Schneider tallied an unassisted goal with 31 seconds to play to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead after a period.

In the second, Breck Hirrschoff scored off assists from Jacob Kahle and Miles Merhib early in the period before Schneider notched another goal as Merhib set it up as Brookings went up 3-1.

Schneider tallied his third goal of the game midway through the third with the assist going to Jack Merritt for the final margin.

Addison Ronning finished with six saves.

Saturday

 Brookings 5, Boji 1

Hirrschoff tallied the lone Ranger goal in the first period as the score was tied 1-1 after one.

In the second, Schneider scored off a Kahle setup before Hirrschoff lit the lamp with 20 seconds left with David Brink earning the assist as Brookings led 3-1 through two.

Chase Karch opened the third-period scoring off assists from Merhib and Schneider before Merritt scored off a setup by Jacob Peterson.

Ronning had eight saves as Brookings held a 42-9 edge in shots.

 Brookings 9, Mitchell 2

Hirrschoff sandwiched a pair of goals around a Schneider tally as Zach Struck, Brink and Eli Johnson earned assists as the Rangers led 3-0 after one.

Struck scored three times in the second for a 6-2 lead through two as Hirrschoff and Luke Honkomp set up the first and Kahle assisted on the last two.

Brookings tacked on three more goals in the third as Kahle, Honkomp and Hirrschoff scored with Honkomp and Brink assisting Kahle; Hirrschoff setting up Honkomp; and Karch assisting Hirrschoff.

Ronning stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced for the win.

Friday

 Brookings 10, Watertown 0

Hirrschoff scored three first-period goals – the first set up by Peterson and the last two unassisted – as the Rangers led 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

Honkomp opened the second-period scoring off a Hirrschoff assist before Struck lit the lamp off a Peterson assist. Kahle and Hirrschoff closed the scoring with unassisted goals to push Brookings lead to 7-0 through two.

Struck, Peterson and Hirrschoff added third-period goals as Hirrschoff and Kahle set up Struck and Struck assisted on Hirrschoff’s tally.

Ronning had 11 saves for the shutout win.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Rangers lost a pair of weekend games on Nov. 25 and Nov. 26 to Rushmore, 5-4 on Saturday and 4-2 on Sunday.

 Rushmore 5, Brookings 4

Garrett Bothe and Jordan Raatz each tallied an unassisted goal as the Rangers led 2-1 after a period.

Raatz notched another unassisted goal in the second period as Brookings led 3-2 through two and then scored in the third off a Gage Peterson setup, but the Thunder scored three goals in the final period to pull out the win as Egan Jensen suffered the loss in goal.

• Rushmore 4, Brookings 2

The Thunder scored twice in the first period and then added two more in the second as Raatz and Peterson tallied goals for the Rangers in the second. Jack Lee assisted on Peterson’s goal as Rushmore led 4-2 after two periods.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the third as Jensen finished with 26 saves in the loss.
