Junior varsity girls post 2-0 weekend, boys go 1-1

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Junior Varsity Rangers split a pair of South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association league games over the weekend, falling 3-2 to Fremont on Saturday at Larson Ice Center before shutting out Sioux Center, 12-0, on Sunday.

The split leaves the 7-2 Rangers in a fourth-place tie in the standings with Yankton as each team has 14 points.

The JV plays host to the Bucks in a 3:15 p.m. game on Saturday before traveling to Mitchell for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.

• Fremont 3, Rangers 2

The Flyers led 1-0 after a period and were down 2-0 in the second before Kobe Ischen’s unassisted goal with less than a minute to play before intermission made it 2-1 heading into the third.

Fremont scored early in the third to go up 3-1, but Ischen got the Rangers back within one with his second goal of the game with 9:18 left as Luc Bouchard earned the assist.

Brookings held an 18-16 edge in shots as Philip Kuechenmeister finished with 13 saves in the loss.

• Rangers 12, Sioux Center 0

Brookings built a 2-0 lead after a period; added seven goals in the second; and then tacked on three more in the third for the final margin.

Ischen scored midway through the first off an assist from Peyton Stensgaard, and then the two traded as Stensgaard lit the lamp with four seconds to play off an Ischen setup.

Riley Jacobsen needed less than a minute into the second period to make it 3-0 off assists from Shawn Kurban and Jordan Svobodny before Carter Shoup sandwiched four goals around another Ischen tally. Ischen and Stensgaard assisted on the first and Kurban set up the second as Stengaard and Shoup assisted on Ischen’s goal. Stengaard and Ischen set up Shoup’s third and fourth goals before Svobodny and Kurban assisted on a Stensgaard goal that made it 9-0 heading into the third.

Ischen scored twice – the first unassisted on a power-play chance – and the second set up by Stensgaard and Evan Becher, before Jacobsen provided the final score with an unassisted tally.

The Rangers held a 48-5 edge in shots as Kuechenmeister earned the shutout win with five saves.

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS

The JV Rangers posted two SDAHA wins over weekend – beating Sioux Falls, 6-1, on Saturday at LIC before knocking off Aberdeen, 3-2, in overtime at the Odde Center, to extend their lead in the standings. Brookings is 11-0 with 22 points.

The Rangers play a pair of games against Huron on Sunday at Bergman Arena with the puck dropping at 11 a.m. and again at 3 p.m.

• Rangers 6, Sioux Falls 1

Emma Rice scored an unassisted goal to give Brookings a 1-0 lead after a period and when the Flyers tied the game less than three minutes into the third, the Rangers responded with five unanswered goals.

Jenna Schulte’s unassisted goal gave Brookings the lead before Janaya Kuehl, Savannah Barber and Addi Ramlo tacked on unassisted tallies. Barber provided the final margin off an assist from Kuehl as Jadyn Runge earned the win in goal.

• Rangers 3, Aberdeen 2, OT

Brookings drew first blood as Barber netted the puck less than five minute into play off a Ramlo assist but the Cougars found the back of the net twice to take a 2-1 lead after a period.

Barber converted a power-play opportunity midway through the second period as Brooklyn Roberts and Kuehl picked up the assists and neither team could score through the rest of regulation to send the game into extra time.

Ramlo netted the game-winning goal less than two minutes into to overtime as the Rangers held a 25-14 edge in shots with Runge stopping 12 Cougar chances in the win.

BANTAM A

The Bantam A Rangers took on two teams in the top of the SDAHA standings and came away with two losses over the weekend. Brookings fell 4-1 at Sioux Falls East on Saturday and then dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Fremont at Larson Ice Center.

The Bantams sit in third place in the standings with 11 points, courtesy of a 5-3-0-1 mark while the Sioux Falls West Flyers (7-3) and Fremont (6-0-0-2) lead the league with 14 points. East (5-5) is tied with Mitchell for fourth with 10 points.

The Rangers get another shot at East on Friday as they play host to the Flyers in a 7 p.m. at LIC before traveling to Mitchell on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game against the Marlins.

• S.F. East 4, Rangers 1

Sioux Falls led 1-0 after a period, courtesy of a power-play goal, and the Flyers extended their lead to 4-1 through two as Ellie Hegdahl scored the Rangers’ lone goal off assists from Kane Kurtenbach and Tristan VanDeVere early in the second period. The Rangers held a 24-19 edge in shots as Carter Schulz finished with 15 saves in the loss.

• Fremont 3, Rangers 2, OT

Max Kjelden gave Brookings the early lead off a Cole Mahlum assist before Fremont scored 2 1/2 minutes later to send the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Jamison Honkomp lit the lamp late in the second as Mahlum and Kjelden earned the assists to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.

But the Flyers scored in the third to force OT, and then, outshot the Rangers, 3-0, in extra time before netting the game-winning goal.

Fremont held a 26-23 advantage in shots as Schulz collected 23 saves.

BANTAM B

The Bantam B Rangers led 1-0 after a period; added two in the second to go up 3-1; and then held on for a 3-2 SDAHA win at Yankton on Sunday.

Wes Koenig tallied an unassisted goal in the first before Mason McKnight cashed in on a power-play chance in the second off Noah Ronning’s assist. Jerett Syrstad tacked on what would prove to be the game-winning goal midway through period as Carter Merritt picked up the assist.

Yankton held a 24-22 edge in shots as Kaden Gutormson finished with 22 saves in the win as the Bantams improved to 3-4 in league play.

Brookings plays host to Rushmore this weekend at Larson Ice Center as they take on the Thunder at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

PEEWEE A

The PeeWee A Rangers went 0-3 over the weekend at the New Ulm (Minn.) Tournament, falling 4-3 in their opener to Mankato; 8-2 to Delano Area; and then closing with a 4-1 loss to Champlin Park.

Brookings returns to SDAHA league play this weekend with a home game against Sioux Falls West on Friday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Watertown for a 9:30 a.m. match against the Lakers on Sunday.

• Mankato 4, Rangers 3

The Rangers scored a goal in each period as Logan Bortnem scored unassisted goals in both the first and third while Zach Struck netted the puck off a Jeffrey Min assist in the second. Brookings held a 29-24 edge in shots as Holden Richardson finished with 20 saves.

• Delano Area 8, Rangers 2

Delano Area led 2-1 after a period and 6-1 through two on the way to the 8-2 win as Breck Hirrschoff scored for the Rangers early in the first period off a Talon Richter setup.

Bortnem tallied an unassisted goal in the third for the final Ranger score as Delano outshot Brookings, 37-28, with Richardson coming up with 29 saves.

• Champlin Park 4, Rangers 1

Champlin Park scored three unanswered goals in the first period before each team notched a score in the second for the final margin.

Richter netted the puck – unassisted – early in the second for the Rangers’ only score as Brookings held a 23-20 edge in shots as Richardson collected 15 saves.

PEEWEE B

The Rangers went 0-4 over the weekend, losing a pair of SDAHA games to Rushmore, 6-0 and 9-1, on Friday and Saturday before dropping two league games to Yankton, 7-2 and 4-2, on Sunday.

The PeeWee B squad has a busy weekend coming up as they play host to Sioux Falls West on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to Sioux Center on Saturday for a pair of games against the Storm.

• Rushmore 6, Rangers 0

The Thunder held a 39-3 advantage in shots as Kade Brecher came up with 33 saves in goal for Brookings.

• Rushmore 9, Rangers 1

The Thunder led 6-0 after two periods before Jack Merritt scored off a Miles Merhib assist to open the third period. Rushmore outshot the Rangers, 41-6, as Brecher finished with 32 saves.

• Yankton 7, Rangers 2

Joseph Wu scored on a power-play opportunity late in the first to give the Rangers the lead, but Yankton tied the game with 48 seconds to play in the period before Roberts lit the lamp 18 seconds later off assists from Merritt and Merhib. The Bucks scored with 19 seconds left to send the game into the first intermission tied at 2-2.

Yankton added three goals in the second and two more in the third for the final margin as the Bucks finished with 39-12 margin in shots as Brecher had 32 saves.

• Yankton 4, Rangers 2

Brookings led 1-0 after a period as Merhib found the back of the net off assists from Jesse Roberts and Merritt.

But Yankton scored twice in the second period and then added a goal in the third to take a 3-1 lead before Wu netted an unassisted goal to get the Rangers within one. The Bucks added an insurance goal inside of three minutes to play as they held a 33-15 edge in shots with Brecher collecting 29 saves.
