Junior Varsity Rangers place second in Dakota Premier Classic

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Ranger JV had a solid four days of hockey by winning a league game, 6-0, over Mitchell on Thursday night, and then, going 3-1 in the Junior Gold B Tournament at Larson Ice Center to finish second. Brookings opened with another win over the Marlins – this time 4-2 on Friday – before shutting out St. Michael-Albertville, 8-0, on Saturday morning. A 5-1 win over Elk River on Saturday afternoon sent the Rangers into the championship game against Huron, where they lost 6-1.

Brookings, 8-1 and second in the SDAHA standings with 16 points, returns to league play with a pair of games against the Thunder in Rapid City on Jan. 30-31.

• Brookings 6, Mitchell 0

The Rangers scored twice in the first, once in the second, and then, added three in the third for the shutout win as Philip Kuechenmeister finished with 23 saves as Brookings held a 40-23 edge in shots.

Jordan Svobodny opened the scoring off an assist from Nick Jonas before Carter Merritt found the back of the net with Cayden Jacobsma and Svobodny earned the helpers.

Kane Kurtenbach tallied an unassisted goal early in the second for the 3-0 lead through two.

In the third, lit the lamp with the assist going to Dalton Rittershaus; Riley Jacobsen scored off setups by Luc Bouchard and Evan Becher; and then, Rittershaus added an unassisted goal.

JR GOLD B

• Brookings 4, Mitchell 2

The Marlins led 1-0 after one and 2-1 through two before the Rangers rallied to the win with three goals in the third.

Ischen notched the second-period goal off an assist from Rittershaus.

In the third, Svobodny scored as Rittshaus and Jack McCarty picked up the assists; Rittershaus found the back of the net off an Ischen setup; and then Ischen added an unassisted goal with 17 seconds on the clock for the final.

Brookings outshot Mitchell, 32-23, as Reis Jacobsen earned the win in net with 21 saves.

• Brookings 8, St. Michael-Albertville 0

The Rangers dominated play as they outshot STMA, 54-12, with Kaden Gutormson picking up the shutout win between the pipes with 12 saves.

Jacobsma and Jacobsen lit the lamp in the first period as Rittershaus and Bouchard earned the respective assists.

In the second, Kurtenbach scored off another Bouchard set up before Trevor Pederson found the back of the net off a McCarty assist. Merritt tallied an unassisted goal for the 5-0 lead heading into the final frame.

Rittershaus’ unassisted goal opened the third-period scoring before Kurtenbach and Ischen each scored with Ischen and Rittershaus earning the respective assists.

• Brookings 5, Elk River 1

Rittershaus gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead after a period as McCarty and Ischen set up the goal.

In the second period, Jacobsen scored off a Bouchard helper as Brookings led 2-1.

Jacobsen opened the third-period scoring with an unassisted tally before Rittershaus and Bouchard each tacked on a goal. Ischen set up Rittershaus while Pederson notched the assist on Bouchard’s goal.

Kuechenmeister collected 21 saves as the Rangers outshot Elk River, 44-22.

• Huron 6, Brookings 1

The All-Stars dominated play early – outshooting Brookings, 13-4, to take a 2-0 lead after a period.

Huron added two goals in the second to lead 4-0 heading into the third.

Kurtenbach scored early in the final period off a Bouchard assist, but the All-Stars added a pair of insurance goals for the final margin.

Kuechenmeister finished with 27 saves as Huron held a 33-27 edge in shots.

BANTAM A

The Rangers won a pair of league games over the weekend – 8-1 at Oahe and 8-2 at Huron – to improve to 4-0-0-1 and move into third place in the SDAHA standings with nine points. The Bantams also travel to Rapid City for a pair of league games against Rushmore, Dec. 30-31.

• Brookings 8, Oahe 1

The Rangers scored four goals in the first period and then added two in each of the following frames for the 8-1 league win.

Ashton Witte opened the scoring off an assist from Wes Koenig before Talon Richter scored back-to-back goals as Koenig set up the first and Witte the second. Caden Krogman made it 4-0 as Koenig notched a playmaker with his third setup.

In the second, Brody Powers lit the lamp with the assists going to Richter and Jackson Law, and then, Witte scored off assists from Krogman and Logan Bortnem as Brookings led 6-0 heading into the third.

Bortnem found the back of the net as Koenig notched another assist before Connor Strand scored with Bortnem and Witte getting the helpers.

The Rangers held a 42-6 edge in shots as Kade Brecher stopped five Capital shots.

• Brookings 8, Huron 2

The Bantams led 2-0 after a period before extending their lead to 6-1 through two on the way to the six-goal win.

Bortnem and Koenig scored first-period goals as Witte and Law picked up the respective assists.

In the second, Koenig tallied an unassisted goal before Jacob Drew scored off a Richter setup. Bortnem and Trenton Pederson notched an unassisted goal apiece for the five-goal edge heading to the third.

Powers scored early in the third off an assist from Drew before Bortnem finished off a hat trick with the assist going to Schulte.

Holden Richardson stopped 17 of the 19 shots that he faced as the Rangers took 47 shots.

14U GIRLS

The Rangers fell, 7-4, to Watertown on Dec. 17 to drop to 2-3 in league play. Brookings plays host to Huron on Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.

• Watertown 7, Brookings 4

The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a period as Addie Ramlo and Savannah Barber each lit the lamp with unassisted tallies late in the frame.

Barber added another unassisted goal in the second period as the Lakers rallied to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third.

Ramlo notched her second unassisted goal with 22 seconds to play in the game, but it wasn’t enough as Watertown added four third-period goals for the win.

Heidi Merriman finished with 16 saves in the loss as the Lakers outshot Brookings, 23-12.

PEEWEE B BLUE

The PeeWee B Blue Rangers posted a 0-3 record at the Dakota Premier Classic at Larson Ice Center, Dec. 2-3. Blue opened with a 5-4 loss to Boji before dropping a 7-1 decision to the MBA Storm and a 12-1 decision to the Des Moines Jr. Bucs.

• Boji 5, Brookings 4

Gage Peterson scored two goals in the first period to help the Rangers to a 2-2 deadlock after one. Wyatt Carlson and Jack Lee set up the first goal while Lee assisted on the second.

The Blizzard scored twice in the second to take a 4-2 lead into the final frame.

In the third, Jordan Raatz tallied an unassisted goal and Peterson picked up a hat trick off an assist from Koen Beinhorn, but Boji scored once for the 5-4 win.

Egan Jensen finished with 17 saves in the loss as the Blizzard held a 22-17 edge in shots.

• MBA Storm 7, Brookings 1

The Storm led 3-0 after a period before the Rangers played evenly in the second as both teams scored a goal – Brookings coming on the stick of Garrett Bothe off an assist from Aidan Austreim.

The Storm added three more goals in the third as they outshot Blue, 47-18, with Jensen getting 40 stops.

• Des Moines 12, Brookings 1

The Jr. Bucs led 8-0 through two before the Rangers got on the scoreboard in the third period on a Peterson unassisted goal.

Des Moines outshot Blue, 48-11, as Jensen came up with 36 saves.

Dec. 10

• Brookings 8, Mitchell 0

The Rangers tallied three goals in the first period as Lee opened the scoring off an assist from Peterson before Bothe and Peterson notched unassisted goals.

Peterson added three unassisted goals in the second, and then, opened the third-period scoring with his fifth goal, with the assist going to Raatz. Bothe provided for the final margin with another unassisted tally.

Jensen earned the shutout win with 24 saves.

SQUIRTS A – BLACK

The Rangers posted a 1-1-2 mark over the weekend in Sioux Falls as Black tied with Sioux Falls Blue 2, 3-3; beat Sioux Falls Blue 1, 8-1; tied with Yankton, 5-5; and then dropped a 7-2 decision to Rushmore.

• Brookings 3, S.F. Blue 2 3

Mavrick Bortnem tallied an unassisted goal as the game was tied 1-1 after one.

Riley Linstad notched an unassisted goal in the second as Brookings trailed 3-2 through two.

Bortnem tied the game with 3:07 left in the game off a Talon Hyde assist.

Ryder Anderson finished with eight saves as the Rangers held a 26-11 edge in shots.

• Brookings 8, S.F. Blue 1 1

Gideon Merhib and Cody Jacobson each scored an unassisted goal before Jackson Heller found the back of the net off a Hyde setup as the Rangers led 3-1 after one.

Heller tallied two more goals to earn the hat trick to open the second period – the first unassisted and the second assisted by Hyde – before Hyde lit the lamp with his own unassisted goals for a 6-1 lead through two.

Cooper Schneider lit the lamp off a Heller assist, and then, Jacobson provided for the final score with an unassisted goal as Brookings held a 30-6 advantage in shots with Anderson collecting five saves.

• Brookings 5, Yankton 5

Hyde scored midway through the first off an assist from Thor Kahler as the score was tied 1-1 after one.

Linstad notched two unassisted goals as the Rangers trailed 4-3 through two.

In the third, Schneider tallied an unassisted goal before Linstad scored for a hat trick as Anderson finished with six saves.

• Rushmore 7, Brookings 2

Merhib scored off a Heller assist as the Thunder led 3-1 after one period.

Rushmore pushed its lead to 6-1 through two before Braden Dobesh lit the lamp in the third off a Hyde assist as the Thunder matched that goal for the 7-2 win as Anderson notched 27 saves.
