JV Rangers win 4 games to take top spot in SDAHA standings

The JV Rangers won four games last week to move into the top spot in the SDAHA standings with 24 points, courtesy of their 12-3 record.

Brookings won 4-3 over Sioux Falls 2 on Thursday before beating Watertown, 4-2, on Friday. The Rangers beat Aberdeen 3-2 on Saturday and then shut out Brandon Valley, 14-0, on Sunday.

The Rangers play host to Yankton on Friday.

• Brookings 4, Sioux Falls II 3

The Rangers scored three goals in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the game for an early lead before Sioux Falls tallied a single goal late in the first to make it 3-1 after one.

Kane Kurtenbach started the scoring off an assist from Charlie Marshall before Luc Bouchard lit the lamp with the assists going to Kobe Ischen and Jack McCarty.

Jordan Svobodny found the back of the net off assists from Noah Ronning and Evan Becher to make it 3-0.

The Flyers netted a pair of goals in the second period to knot the game at 3-3 heading into the third.

McCarty tallied the game winner with 10:06 to play as Trevor Pederson and Ischen set up the goal.

Philip Kuechenmeister stopped 24 shots for the win in goal as Sioux Falls held a 27-26 edge in shots.

• Brookings 4, Watertown 2

The Rangers scored twice in the first period for a 2-0 lead after one before Watertown closed within 2-1 through two with a second-period tally.

The Lakers tied the game early in the third but Brookings answered with a pair of goals less than a minute apart for the 4-2 final.

Bouchard cashed in on a power-play chance to give the Rangers the lead as Kurtenbach and Sajen Perry earned the assists. Dalton Rittershaus then tallied an unassisted power-play goal for the 2-0 lead after the first 17 minutes.

After Watertown pulled within 2-1 through two, the Lakers scored 3 1/2 minutes into the third to tie the game. But Rittershaus netted his second goal – assisted by McCarty and Ischen – to put Brookings back into the lead and then McCarty added an insurance goal off a Rittershaus setup for the final margin.

Kaden Gutormson collected 19 saves as the Rangers outshot Watertown, 30-21.

• Brookings 3, Aberdeen 2

The Rangers built a 3-1 lead through two periods and held on for the one-goal win.

Ischen lit the lamp midway through the first period off an assist from Rittershaus, but the Cougars scored late in the period to tie the game at 1-1 after one.

Ischen netted his second goal, this time unassisted, less than a minute into the second, and then, Carter Merritt scored off a Ronning setup for the two-goal lead through two.

Aberdeen scored with 5 seconds remaining on a power-play goal, but it was too little, too late as the Rangers skated away with the 3-2 win.

Brookings held a 41-19 edge in shots as Reis Jacobsen earned the win with 17 saves.

• Brookings 14, Brandon Valley 0

The Rangers scored six goals in each of the first two periods before tacking on two in the third for the shutout win.

Bouchard started the onslaught as Kurtenbach and Riley Jacobsen earned the assists.

Dylan Park scored back-to-back goals with Bouchard picking up the assist on the first goal while Merritt and Gutormson set up the second.

Kurtenbach lit the lamp off assists from Riley Jacobsen and Bouchard before Pederson tallied an unassisted goal.

Jerett Syrstad made it 6-0 with the assist going to Merritt to close the first.

Ischen netted a goal to open the second as McCarty and Marshall earned the assists.

Riley Jacobsen scored off a Becher setup before McCarty pushed the lead to 9-0 as Pederson and Cayden Jacobsma were credited with assists.

Bouchard tallied his second goal of the game with Kurtenbach picking up the assist, and then, Becher notched an unassisted goal.

Svobodny’s goal off assists from Ronning and Pederson made it 12-0 heading into the third.

Ischen netted his second goal as Kurtenbach picked up the assist for a playmaker, and then, McCarty tallied a power-play goal with Svobodny and Ronning earning the helpers for the final margin.

Reis Jacobsen stopped all eight shots that he faced for the shutout win in goal as Brookings outshot Brandon Valley, 42-8.

BANTAMS

The Rangers defeated Aberdeen, 4-2, on Saturday to run their record to 6-1-0-1 on the season and move into a second-place tie with Fremont in the SDAHA standings with 13 points. Sioux Falls, 10-0, leads the league with 20 points.

Brookings travels to Yankton on Saturday.

• Brookings 4, Aberdeen 2

After a scoreless first period, the Rangers netted three second-period goals for a 3-0 lead through two. After the Cougars scored twice, Brookings tacked on an insurance goal for the 4-2 win.

Logan Bortnem netted the first goal off assists from Talon Richter and Trenton Pederson to break the scoreless tie before Pederson tallied an unassisted goal for a 2-0 lead. Caden Krogman lit the lamp with Jackson Law picking up the assist to give the Rangers the three-goal advantage heading into the final period.

Aberdeen scored two quick goals to open the third before Bortnem scored his second goal of the game off a Joseph Wu setup for the final margin.

Brookings outshot the Cougars, 48-9, as Kade Brecher finished with seven saves for the win in goal.

14U GIRLS

The Rangers opened the weekend with a 7-6 overtime loss to Huron before bouncing back with two wins – 5-3 over the All-Stars and then a 10-0 shutout of Sioux Center.

Brookings, 4-3-0-1 and second in the SDAHA standings with nine points, plays host to Aberdeen on Saturday.

• Huron 7, Brookings 6, OT

Savannah Barber tallied an unassisted goal in the first period to send the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Barber netted another unassisted goal in the second on a power play, but Huron scored three times for a 4-2 lead through two.

Barber tallied four third-period goals – the first three unassisted and the fourth set up by Addie Ramlo to beat the clock – as the All-Stars scored twice for a 6-6 deadlock at the end of regulation.

Huron’s goal a minute into the extra play provided for the 7-6 final as the All-Stars held a 32-18 edge in shots. Heidi Merriman suffered the loss after collecting 25 saves.

• Brookings 5, Huron 3

The Rangers scored twice in the first period – an unassisted goal by Barber and a goal by Maggie Dunbar with the assist going to Kiran Vugteveen – to lead 2-1 after a period.

The All-Stars scored two goals to open the second period before Brookings responded with three unanswered goals for a 5-3 lead through two. Taylor Hokenson lit the lamp off a Ramlo assist before Barber found the back of the net with the eventual game winner as Aletha Baker earned the assist.

Vugteveen tacked on a late insurance goal with the assist going to Jayda Geraets for the two-goal lead, which held up as neither team lit the lamp in the third.

Merriman notched 19 saves as the Rangers outshot Huron, 20-19.

• Brookings 14, Sioux Center 0

The Rangers dominated play as they scored five first-period goals; added three in the second; and then, tacked on two in the third for the shutout win.

Ella Park opened the scoring off a Geraets setup before Jadyn Kuehl scored back-to-back goals – the first assisted by Vugteveen and the second set up by Hokenson. Hokenson then scored off a Kuehl assist before Kuehl notched a hat trick with the third goal of the period, which was set up by Baker.

Ramlo tallied an unassisted goal early in the second period, and then, Hokenson scored off a Kuehl assist before Vugteveen lit the lamp with a short-handed, unassisted goal to make it 8-0 through two.

Park scored her second goal of the contest off a Vugteveen assist before Payton Triplett found the back of the net with the assist going to Kuehl for the final margin.

Brookings outshot the Tornadoes, 55-2, as Merriam stopped both Sioux Center shots for the shutout win.

PEEWEES

The PeeWee A Rangers won two games last week to move into a third-place tie with Rushmore in the SDAHA standings with 22 points. On Thursday, Brookings, 11-1-0-0, Sioux Falls I, 6-2, before shutting out Brandon Valley, 10-0, on Saturday.

The Rangers return to league action on Saturday, Jan. 20, with a pair of games in Yankton.

Jacob Peterson tallied an unassisted goal in the first period as the score was tied 1-1 through one.

The Rangers took a 4-1 lead after two periods as Owen Schneider lit the lamp off an Eli Johnson assist, and then Peterson sandwiched a pair of goals around a Luke Honkomp tally. Zach Struck had a hand in both Peterson goals while Jack Merritt helped on the first. Chase Karch and Jacob Kahle set up Honkomp’s goal.

Peterson added another goal in the third for a hat trick plus one, as Struck earned a playmaker with his third assist.

Addison Ronning earned the win in net with 13 saves as Brookings outshot the Flyers, 43-15.

• Brookings 10, Brandon Valley 0

Ronning shut out the Ice Cats for the win in goal as the Rangers scored four goals in the first; added three in the second; and then tacked on three more in the third for the 10-0 final.

Schneider opened the scoring off a Honkomp assist before Struck tallied back-to-back goals with the respective assists going to Peterson and Merritt. Karch finished off the first-period scoring off a setup from Honkomp.

Struck tallied two back-to-back goals to open the second as Merritt and Schneider picked up the assists, respectively. Honkomp made it 7-0 as Schneider picked up another assist.

In the third period, Struck scored again for a hat trick plus two, before Kahle and Peterson both lit the lamp. All three third-period goals were unassisted.

SQUIRTS

The Squirt Black A Rangers lost three games over the weekend in Luverne. Brookings lost 15-0 to the hosts; dropped a 15-2 decision to Sioux Falls Gold; and then, closed the weekend with a 8-7 overtime loss to Fairmont.

Ryder Anderson finished with 22 saves in the loss as the host squad outshot the Rangers, 37-6.

• S.F. Gold 15, Brookings 2

Sioux Falls led 5-1 after a period and 12-2 through two before tacking on three goals in the third for the final margin.

Thor Kahler tallied an unassisted goal in the first period for the Rangers before Talon Hyde scored an unassisted goal in the second.

Anderson collected 26 saves as Gold outshot Brookings, 41-10.

• Fairmont 8, Brookings 7, OT

The Rangers led 2-0 after a period as Hyde and Jackson Heller lit the lamp with unassisted goals.

In the second period, Mavrick Bortnem found the back of the net off a Cooper Schneider assist as the game was tied 3-3 heading into the third period.

Hyde tallied three straight goals in the final frame – assisted by Kahler on the first while Gideon Merhib set up the last two – before Riley Linstad scored an unassisted goal as the score was tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation.

Anderson notched 26 saves as Fairmont outshot the Rangers, 34-27.
