 Keith Leonard Smith, 75, of Brookings, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family.  

Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings with the Rev. Teri Johnson officiating. Burial is in the Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings.  Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Keith was born on Oct. 6, 1942, in Worthington, Minnesota, to the late Walter L. Smith and Ruth J. “Riebel” Smith. He lived in Portland, Oregon, as a child and then spent time in various places in South Dakota and Minnesota before moving to Brookings. Keith was a 1960 graduate of Tyler High School in Minnesota and attended one year a SDSU. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Chopper SS342 submarine and was stationed in Key West, Florida.  Keith married his loving wife, Judy Peterson on May 13, 1972 in Watertown. 

Keith was a true outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow up. 

He is survived by his wife Judy Smith; daughters, Teresa Chapman and, Kimberly Lietz (Jim); son Brian Peterson (Kathy); four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Wayne Hoffman (Karen), two sisters-in-law Carolyn Apland and Gayle Smith, and a host of nieces and nephews. 

Keith was preceded in death by his brother Dennis Smith and brother-in-law Larry Apland.
