Kernels defeat Bobcats in ESD action

MITCHELL – The Bobcats battled in Tuesday’s Eastern South Dakota Conference dual against the Kernels, but the 18 points that they gave up via forfeits proved to be too much to overcome as Mitchell prevailed, 44-31.

Brookings captured the early team lead after Nolan Archer won by fall in 2 minutes, 52 seconds over Brock Sparks at 106 pounds.

At 113, Connor Klinkhammer extended the Bobcats’ advantage with a 4-1 decision over Blake Stange.

But then, the Kernels took the next five matches – including two by forfeit – to go up 27-9.

Kyle Bauder posted a 17-1 tech fall over Jaxon Bowes in 4:28 at 120 before Ryan McGinnis won by forfeit at 126. Logan Sparks won by fall in 3:09 over Jacob Montis at 132; Cole Gehrke claimed a 16-3 major decision over Sam Lehman at 138; and then, Sutton Carpenter won by forfeit at 145.

Cole Loiseau stopped the Kernel run with a win by fall in 5:42 over Blake Fredericks at 152 to make it 27-15, but Briggs Havlik claimed a 16-1 tech fall over Logan Bowes in 4:39 at 160 to give Mitchell a 32-15 edge.

Jacob Schoon answered for the ‘Cats at 170 pounds with a pin in 3:33 over Max Schoenfelder before another forfeit went to the Kernels at 182, claimed by Carter Max.

Carson Max won by fall in 1:56 over Aaron Schmidt at 195 before Brookings won the final two matches.

Gus Miller posted an 11-1 major decision over Wyatt Winter at 220 and then, Tucker Christie won by fall in 2:23 over Mitch Schladweiler for the 44-31 final score.

On Saturday, the Bobcats head to Lake Crystal, Minn., to compete in the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Tournament. Action starts at 10 a.m.
