King, Burdick, Courter earn MVP honors

FARGO, N.D. – South Dakota State’s Rachel King and Kyle Burdick swept the track MVP honors, and Bryant Courter was named field MVP as the Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded Saturday at the Shelly Ellig Facility.

King racked up 28 team points for the weekend.

She won the mile in 4 minutes, 50.71 seconds and was runner-up in the 5,000 meters with a 16:57.5 clocking on Saturday. King prevailed in the 3,000 on Friday.

Burdick also excelled in the distance events, matching King with 28 points.

He won the mile in a time of 4:08.29 and placed second to teammate Chase Cayo (14:29.44) in the 5,000 in 14:29.62. Burdick also won the 3,000 on Friday.

Courter placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 50 feet, 5 1/4 inches and ended up second in the high jump after clearing 6-10 3/4. He was runner-up in the long jump the day before.

Jackrabbit Krista Steele won the 800-meter run in a school- and meet-record time of 2:09.3.

On the men’s side Mason Leiseth (55-11 1/4) and Noah Huber (55-11) were second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Josh Goehring (1:55.17) and Wyatt Gatrost (1:55.33) went 2-3 in the 800.

Landon Larson, Cameron Kuil, Josh Goehring and Sam Johnson were third in the 4x400 in 3:19.9.

In the 5,000, Micah Mather (14:50.84) finished fourth and Gabe Peters (14:56.25) took sixth.

JJ Hejna (6-8 3/4) took fifth and Riley Sears (6-4 3/4) seventh in the high jump. Ephram Albrecht (45-5) was fifth and Hejna (44-7 1/2) seventh in the triple jump.

Sam Zenner (7.09) placed sixth in the 60-meter dash and Nick Wessels (8.46) matched that finish in the 60-meter hurdles.

Evan Hieber totaled 4,996 points to take sixth in the heptathlon.

Larson finished sixth in the 200 in 22.22. Sebastian Sowada (4:18.54) and Peters (4:18.96) were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the mile.

Johnson rounded out the place-winners on the men’s side with an eighth-place showing in the 400 (50.02).

For the women, Savannah Dolezal, Vanessa Lane, Delaney Carlson and Steele teamed for a second-place showing in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:49.58.

Haymie O’Connor was third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.65 seconds.

Former Estelline standout Savannah Dolezal was fifth in the 400 with a 57.72 clocking. Miatta Flemister-Smith matched that finish in the 60 (7.75) and added a seventh-place finish in the 200 (25.24).

Madi Moorhouse (shot put; 47-0 1/4) and Renae Dykstra (800; 2:15.51) both placed seventh, and Micayla Ter Wee (shot put; 44-7) took eighth.

The Jackrabbits won eight events overall in the meet.

North Dakota State won the men’s team title with 179.5 points and South Dakota State was second at 163.

The Bison women prevailed with 224 points, as South Dakota (207.5) finished second, Oral Roberts (87) third and the Jackrabbits (81) fourth.
