King, Burdick, Courter win titles; Jackrabbits sweep DMR

BROOKINGS – Rachel King, Kyle Burdick and Bryant Courter posted wins and South Dakota State swept the distance medley relays to open the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Jackrabbit-Sanford Athletic Complex.

King broke the school indoor record in the women’s 3,000-meter run.

The meet concludes today.

Men

Burdick won his third consecutive title in the 3,000 meters, grabbing the lead early and pulling away to win by nearly 7 seconds with a time of 8 minutes, 13.28 seconds.

The senior from Rapid City is the reigning Championship Track MVP indoors. He also won the mile and took second in the 5,000 in 2018.

Courter, a junior from Rich Hill, Mo., won the long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 6 1/2 inches – achieved on his second attempt of the day.

He has been the Championship Field MVP each of the previous four Summit League meets (two indoors, two outdoors). Last year, he won the triple jump and was runner-up in both the long and high jumps.

Gabe Peters, Wyatt Gatrost, Cal Lawton and Tom Breuckman teamed to take first in the distance medley relay with a 10:07.39 clocking.

Pole vaulter Trent Francom cleared 16-11 on his first attempt while placing second in the event. The height was an inch off his school record.

South Dakota’s Chris Nilsen won with a championship- and facility-record mark of 18-10 1/4.

Daniel Clarke was fourth in the long jump at 23-10.

Joseph Minor-Williams (8:26.54), Micah Mather (8:30.23) and Lukas Nelson (8:30.99) were fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,000 to earn the Jackrabbits nine team points.

Logan Ammons ended up sixth in the weight throw with a heave of 63-1 1/4.

North Dakota State’s Payton Otterdahl won the weight throw with a meet-record mark of 77-10. 

The Bison sit atop the team standings with 62 points and SDSU is second at 55.

Women

King continued her Summit League brilliance with a dominant performance in the 3,000.

She moved to the front of the pack early and never wavered in posting a winning time of 9:26.23 for her third title in a row.

The senior from St. Michael, Minn., broke the facility record by more than 9 seconds and her own school record by nearly two clicks.

King was named the Championship Track MVP in 2018 after also taking the mile and finishing second in the 5,000.

The distance medley relay squad of Cailee Peterson, Delaney Carlson, Rachel Propst and Anna Fasen prevailed in 12:06.73.

Emily Altenburg (18-1 1/2) and Emma Stewart (17-11 1/2) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the long jump.

Jaymie O’Connor reset her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.5 seconds in preliminaries. She qualified for the finals.

NDSU junior and Watertown native Macy Denzer won the pentathlon with 3,695 points, edging Western Illinois’ Michaela Busch (3,676).

USD’s Samara Spencer placed first in the long jump (19-7 1/2) and Lara Bomas was tops in the weight throw (meet-record 72-6 1/2).

The Bison lead the team race with 80 points, followed by the Coyotes (37) in second and North Dakota (26) in third. The Jackrabbits are fourth at 25.
