King finishes 21st

AUSTIN, Texas – South Dakota State All-American Rachel King finished 11th in her heat and 21st overall in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinals at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships on Thursday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The senior from St. Michael, Minnesota, finished in a time of 10 minutes, 29.77 seconds.

She was just over 3 seconds off the lead near the 4:15 mark, before falling off the pace.

The top five finishers in both heats plus the next two fastest times advanced to the finals.

Boise State’s Allie Ostrander had the fastest semifinal time at 9:44.32. Furman’s Gabrielle Jennings, who was also in Heat 2, was second overall at 9:47.84.

Hannah Steelman won the first heat – King’s heat – with a 9:49.51 clocking. The fifth-place finisher in Heat 1, North Carolina State’s Neil Crosby, crossed in 9:58.09 to advance.

Providence’s Brianna Ilarda earned the last spot in the final with a 10:00.39 clocking. She was sixth in Heat 1.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase final is Friday at 5:54 p.m.

King won nine career Summit League titles, including the steeplechase each of the past two seasons, and added a cross country crown.

She was seeded seventh entering Thursday’s race after posting a school-record time of 9:50.15 in the West Preliminary on May 24 in Sacramento, Calif.

King took 23rd in the semis in 10:27.92 a year ago in Eugene, Oregon, and was an All-America honorable mention.

Wednesday

The Jackrabbit squad of freshman Emmanual Phoulom-Smith, sophomores Coby Hilton and Daniel Clarke and junior Sam Zenner finished 19th in the 4x100-meter relay semifinals in 40.17 seconds – the third-fastest time in school history.

The top two teams in each of the three heats plus the next two fastest times advanced to Friday’s final. The Jackrabbits, who were seeded 24th, took sixth in their heat.

North Carolina A&T secured the eighth and final spot with a 39-second clocking. Florida had the fastest semifinal time at 38.35 seconds.

SDSU’s school-record time in the event – 39.99 – came at the NCAA West Preliminary on May 25 in Sacramento, Calif., as the Jackrabbits earned the final spot in the Austin field.
