I am a new resident in Brookings; however, I spent my high school years in Volga.

My wife, Diane, attended Hillcrest Elementary. She is a Brookings High School and SDSU graduate. After 37 years in Spearfish, we are elated to be back in Brookings.

We are very fond of this area and are fully enjoying being a part of this exceptional community. The people and support for family activities are a big part of what makes Brookings such a great place to live.

I am writing to give my support for the new school upgrades.

I spent nine years on the school board in Spearfish, which included being the chairperson for the facilities committee. Our crowning achievement was the building of the Spearfish school system’s newest building, Creek Side Elementary. We too had an older building that was in need of repair.

There is much more to it than just a new building. It is important to update to a more efficient heating and cooling systems, as well as updated wiring. It is essential to keep up with the constant changes in technology. I also focused on better conditions for those with special needs, as well as being able to adjust classrooms to alleviate overcrowding.

I’m sure there has been extensive thought for safety improvements for students and staff. A new and improved building will help make Brookings a great school system. I can’t stress enough how much these improvements help to create a positive environment and source of pride.

I am retired and no longer have children of school age, but I have two grandchildren in Brookings. I want them to have the best school system that this community can provide. So please show your support for the Brookings school system by voting “yes” on June 7.
