Larson Park to get an upgrade

City calls for proposals for new playground equipment

BROOKINGS – The City of Brookings has put out a request for proposals for new playground equipment to be installed at Larson Park, located at 213 22nd Ave.

Deadline for the proposals is 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31.

The reason for the planned upgrade is simple, said Dusty Rodiek, director of Parks, Recreation & Forestry.

“The Larson Park playground is currently the oldest equipment in the system and no longer meets today’s playground standards,” he said in an email to the Register. He wasn’t sure how old the current equipment was, but said it was at least three decades old.

The new equipment and surfacing proposals should provide for ADA accessibility and meet current safety requirements, he added.

“The footprint will be slightly larger than the current large playground area. With the right design the larger size will allow us to cost effectively absorb the small equipment area into a single site,” Rodiek said.

He expects the new equipment would be installed in the spring/summer of 2020.

The budget is $160,000 for the entire project, Rodiek said.

Proposals by hard copy and email should be sent to: Dusty Rodiek, Parks, Recreation & Forestry director, Brookings Parks & Recreation Dept., 520 Third St., Suite 130, Brookings, SD 57006; [email protected]
