Leathernecks top Jackrabbits in five sets

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois beat South Dakota State 15-25, 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 17-15 in a Summit League volleyball match Friday night.

Mackenzie Steckler totaled 20 kills, 1/2 blocks and a service ace for the Leathernecks (6-12, 1-3). Shiah Sanders had nine kills, two blocks and 15 digs. Riley Schumacher contributed eight kills and two blocks. Emma Norris added eight kills and an ace. Shaela Gray had eight kills and a block assist.

Jaime Johnson dished out 46 set assists and came up with 14 digs. Claire Grove notched 20 digs.

For the Jackrabbits, Ashlynn Smith tallied 12 kills, an ace, a block assist and 15 digs. Makenzie Hennen had 10 kills, two aces, a block assist and 17 digs.  Macy Smith racked up 6 1/2 blocks, including a school-record-tying five solo, and five kills. Sierra Peterson chipped in with four kills, five aces and 2 1/2 blocks. Payton Richardson added nine kills and two blocks.

Ellie Benson came up with 31 digs. Maddie Fay (22) and Mattison Munger (20) combined for 42 set assists.

SDSU (2-16, 0-5) plays at South Dakota on Friday at 7 p.m.
