Leonhard, Bender break school records

VERMILLION – South Dakota State’s Dakota Leonhard and Colton Bender each broke a school record during a dual against South Dakota on Saturday at the Lillibridge Track Complex.

Leonhard broke the school record in the javelin with a winning distance of 195 feet, 4 inches.

Bender broke the school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 196 feet, 1 inch. He placed second.

The Coyotes swept the team titles, with the men winning 99-92 and the women prevailing by a 104-87 margin.

The Jackrabbits’ Josh Dotson won the triple jump, setting a meet record with a mark of 49-7.

Landon Larson won the 200-meter dash in 21.31 seconds and Kyle Burdick placed first in the 800 with a 1:51.65 clocking. Both times were meet records.

Joel Reichow was tops in the 1,500 (3:55.43) and teammate Brendan Sage won the 3,000 (8:44.52).

Caleb Cowling was first in the long jump at 23-2.

Brady Brockel, Dru Kenny, Marc Husman and Adam Belhaj teamed to win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:18.56.

Reagan Francom cleared 16-7 1/4 in the pole vault to move into second on the all-time top-10 list. In the 100, Sam Zenner recorded a personal-best time of 10.51, which ranks third in SDSU school history. Both individuals placed second.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Bo Arnold, Larson, Joe Bednar and Zenner combined to finish second in 41.5 seconds, which is good for second in school history.

Silvia Zanini was a double winner on the women’s side, taking the titles in the discus (160-9) and hammer throw (182-9).

Savannah Dolezal won the 400-meter run in 56.46 seconds and is now tied for fifth on the SDSU all-time top-10 list.

Kayla McDonald won the 200 (24.44), Oksana Covey took the 800 (2:11.63) and Rachel King prevailed in the 1,500 (4:32.68).

Dolezal, Jacleen Patterson, McDonald and Vanessa Lane won the 4x400 relay in 3:54.68.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Evelyn Klein posted the third-fastest time in school history, finishing second in 1:03.16.

Up Next

Part of the team will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete in the Jim Duncan Invitational on Friday and Saturday, while some team members will travel to Walnut, Calif., to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
