In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Pink Ladies, PO Box 826, Brookings, 57006.

Leroy David Voss was born on June 22, 1944, in Anoka, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Esther (Steinberg) Voss. The family moved to Brookings when he was a young age and received his education in Brookings and graduated from the school of hard knocks. He started working full time at the age of 13, working as a mason tender for his father.

He married Shirley Cameron on Jan. 26, 1963, in Pipestone, Minnesota. Leroy went into the construction field, working for Mills Construction and Sheesley Mechanical before beginning Voss Construction in the early ‘70s. On nights and weekends, Leroy raised cattle and sold fireworks during the summer.

He started Courtesy Plumbing in the early 80s and later turned the company over to his partner when he and Shirley moved to Colorado to work for Sheesley Mechanical. The couple returned to Brookings and he started Brookings Plumbing and Heating and acquired Brookings Fireworks.

Leroy dedicated his life to his work and his family. Over the years Leroy and Shirley lived in 67 homes in Brookings, either building or remodeling the homes, before moving on to the next. Leroy enjoyed racing earlier in life and building street rods later in life.

He loved driving the countryside, just to see what had changed or what was new around town. He held a great memory and would always reminisce about one of the houses he built or remodeled. He was extremely knowledgeable and even to the end, would get phone calls seeking advice on certain projects.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Voss, of Brookings; three children, Todd Voss, Kristi (Tim) Houtman and Jason Voss, all of Brookings; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Doug (Kathy) Voss of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Gary (Shirley) Voss of Tremonton, Utah; two sisters, Jeanette Huffman and Sherrie (Steve) Hougland, all of Brookings and a host of relatives.

Condolences may be sent to the family through www.rudesfuneralhome.com.
