Leroy A. Suurmeyer, 78, of Brookings passed away Thursday, July 2, 2020, at his home in Brookings. 

Private family services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at First Lutheran Church, in Brookings. A live streaming of the service can be found on the Rude’s Funeral Home Facebook page. A drive-by visitation will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Rude’s Funeral  Home in Brookings.

Leroy A. Suurmeyer was born on May 25, 1942, in Hendricks, MN, the son of Albert and Anna (Kalousek) Suurmeyer.

Leroy received his education in rural school in Brookings County, SD and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1960.  After he received his education, he was employed for James Wholesaling and later became a partner in the business.  He continued in the business until selling in 1993.  Leroy was then employed for Larson Manufacturing for 10 years and retired in 2005.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Pheasants Forever. He was very active for many years on the Brookings Police Reserve.  He especially enjoyed hunting and loved spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Leroy is survived by one sister Sharon Moad of Brookings, SD and nephew, Travis (Klay) Moad of Volgas, SD, niece, Heather (Frankie) Gonzalez of Sioux Falls, SD; great nieces and nephews, Tanner, Landon, Keatyn, Duckie, Luke, Teagan, Lily and Ellie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Douglas Moad and one great niece, Amber.
