Library talk aims to improve intercultural communication

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Public Library will host the Zoom lecture “Intercultural Communication and Culturally Responsive Communities” starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.

The link and login information for this event, presented by Dyanis Popova, assistant professor at the University of South Dakota, can be found on the library’s website or Facebook page

As communities become increasingly diverse, unfamiliarity with cultural differences can often lead to unintended miscommunications. This presentation explores common cultural misinterpretations and provides a framework through which individuals and communities can reflect on their own cultural norms and any cognitive dissonance that arises in interactions with others whose cultural norms may differ. It also provides a framework for positive intercultural communication and creating welcoming and inclusive community spaces and attitudes.

Popova is an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of South Dakota with an academic focus in foundations of education, the teaching of English as an additional language, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Her research interests center on educational equity, culturally responsive and anti-bias education, critical social justice, and the deconstruction of colonial legacies.
