Lions celebrate 70 years

BROOKINGS – Brookings Lions Club celebrated 70 years of living its motto “We Serve” to the Brookings community on Oct. 4.

Recognized for years of service were five-year members Sally Damm Norby and Robert Smith; 15-year member Ron Gelderman; 20-year members Kathy Grady, Ron Seeley and Kay Ruden; 25-year members Eldena Russell Hanson and Brad Ruden; 35-year members Greg Fargen and Steve Gylling; 40-year member Dave Schingoethe; and 50-year member Rich Howard.

Chicago businessman Melvin Jones founded Lions Club International in 1917. Each year the Brookings Lions Club is able to recognize outstanding club members with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. This year the awards were presented to Lions Mitch Steinhoff, Lance Howard and Jeff Morehouse.

Anyone interested in joining the Brookings Lions in service to the Brookings community can contact any Lions member. The club meets twice monthly at Perkins and recognizes Mickelson Middle School students as Good Citizens four times a year.
