Local boys hockey: Brookings Rangers blow out Brandon Valley, win 12th straight

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Rangers boys’ varsity team put together a dominating performance on Saturday night as they beat Brandon Valley 9-0 at the Larson Ice Center.

The Rangers outshot the Ice Cats 66-6. Jay Harris got the scoring going with a goal nine minutes and 49 seconds into the first period. That goal was assisted by Owen Schneider. Schneider then scored a goal of his own with 2:19 left in the period. That goal was assisted by Jack Merritt and Ren Jacobsen. 10 seconds later Zach Struck put one back in the net to make it 3-0. Schneider and Luke Honkomp assisted that goal.

The Rangers would then score four goals in the second period. Riley Linstad scored the first goal 1:32 into the period and it was assisted by Jacobsen and Trenton Pederson. Schneider then scored the next two goals. The first one was an even strength goal and the second one was a power play goal. Both goals were assisted by Struck and Breck Hirrschoiff. Struck then scored the final goal of the period and that was assisted by Hirrschoff and Jacob Kahle.

Hirrschoff would then finally get on the scoreboard 45 seconds into the third period. That goal was assisted by Schneider and he would then score his fourth goal of the game with 4:33 left. Pederson and Honkomp assisted on the final goal of the game.

Kade Brecher got the start in net for the Rangers and had six saves. Schneider ended the game with seven points. Hirrschoff had four points and Jacobsen and Pederson each had two points.

Brookings has now won 12 straight games after dropping its first two. During this win streak the Rangers have outscored their opponents 109-4.

The Rangers will paly at Sioux Falls Varsity 2 on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. Brookings will then play Sioux Falls Varsity 1 in Brookings on Feb. 10 at 7:45 p.m. Sioux Falls 1 has yet to lose a game and beat the Rangers 4-3 in the second game of the season.
