BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested for allegedly using a handgun to threaten people during an argument, according to Brookings Police.

The 28-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges after a Brookings woman filed a report at 8:20 a.m. Friday, said Lt. Derrick Powers.

The incident started Thursday with an argument between the woman and the man at a residence in the 500 block of 12th Street South, Powers said.

“During (the argument), the male became physical with the female ... he brandished a firearm, a handgun. He also ended up putting his hands around the victim’s throat. When she tried to call 911 for help, he prohibited her from doing so,” Powers said.

The woman left the residence for the night and came back Friday morning with another man and two juveniles in a vehicle.

“The 28-year-old male came out with a handgun and approached the vehicle and busted out the driver’s side window of the vehicle with the handgun,” Powers said.

The group in the vehicle left and contacted police.

The man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, interference with emergency communication and intentional damage to property. He was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.
