Local winners named from SDMTA conference

The South Dakota Music Teachers Association recently met for its state conference on the campus of Augustana University in Sioux Falls.

Local winners in the SDMTA Piano Competition include Junior Piano Age 12, Quinn Ulvestad, first place, (teacher, Deb Kalsbeck), Senior Piano Age 14, Aedan Lansang, second place, (teacher, Xuan Kuang), Nancy Yang, Honorable Mention, (teacher, Deb Kalsbeck), Senior Piano, Age 15, Alex Shore, Honorable Mention, (teacher, Lee Ann Meyer), Junior Piano Duet Age 12-13, Natalie Kahler and Quinn Ulvestad, first place, (teacher Deb Kalsbeck). Adjudicators for the events were concert artist, Richard Steinbach, from Sioux City, Iowa, and Marcella Faflak from NSU.

Local winners in the SDMTA Collegiate Voice I Competition include Eric Lohr, Honorable Mention (teacher, Laura Diddle) and Landon Brown, Honorable Mention (teacher, Emily Toronto). Jacob Hoefer took first place in SDMTA Collegiate Voice II, (teacher, Laura Diddle), Kasidy Tvedt took second place, (teacher, Emily Toronto), and Sylvia Kattner, (teacher, Laura Diddle) won Honorable Mention. Also participating was Elizabeth Riley, (teacher, Emily Toronto).

Taking first place in SDMTA Collegiate Brass was Matthew Dulas, (teacher, Kevin Kessler) and second place went to Caroline Reyner, (teacher, David Reynolds).

Advancing to Regionals, Joanna Engels won first place in the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind category (teacher, William Cedeno). Cadence Helleson was named Alternate (teacher, Yiqun Chen) and Ethan Dingman won Honorable Mention (teacher, Michael Walsh). Also advancing to Regionals, Noah Stremmel won first place in the MTNA Senior Woodwinds category (teacher, Yiqun Chen).

William Reynolds (teacher, David Reynolds) was named Alternate in the MTNA Young Artist Brass category, Jacob Pfeifer (teacher, Mark Stevens) won Honorable Mention in the MTNA Young Artist Piano category and Albert Shore (teacher, Lee Ann Meyer) was named Alternate in the MTNA Senior Piano category. Also competing in the MTNA Young Artist Voice category was Kelci Kooistra (teacher, Emily Toronto).

Adjudicator for the MTNA woodwind events was Dr. Brian Hanegan from Augustana University, for the MTNA brass events, Dr. Chris Unger, from Augustana University, for the MTNA voice events Marla Fogderud, from NSU, and for the MTNA piano events, Dr. Richard Steinbach from Sioux City, Iowa.
