BROOKINGS – Allison Schmitt, Brookings volunteer connections coordinator for the Helpline Center, recently announced the following opportunities for area residents to become more involved in the community through volunteering.
Brookings County Food Pantry
Brookings Food Pantry is open to serve clients Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 1-4:30 p.m. Volunteers will assist in the intake and organization of food items at the Brookings Food Pantry. This will include accepting donations, stocking shelves, rotating inventory and marking labels. Opportunities available 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity, Habitat office volunteer
Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity is looking for office volunteers. Help assist the team in many of the daily administrative needs including preparing mailings, filing, folding newsletters and light cleaning.
This opportunity involves a variety of tasks depending on the needs for the day. We are always happy to have administrator or clerical experience in the office though it is not required to join us. This opportunity is ongoing and volunteer times are flexible for scheduling. The office is open Monday–Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m and all hours are open to volunteering.
Brookings Area United Way, community challenges: A poverty simulation
Poverty simulations are a powerful, experiential opportunity for people to learn about and engage in poverty reduction. By participating, community members increase their understanding of the dynamics of poverty and experience, on a small scale, the struggle for self-sufficiency many people in Brookings County face.
The experience runs from 12:30-4 p.m. with an introduction, simulation exercise, and a debriefing period in which participants share their feelings and experiences and learn about ways they can get involved in reducing poverty in the community.
Our day services programs focus on activities Monday-Friday primarily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The Residential Services has seven group homes, two apartment buildings as well as working with individuals in their own homes. Volunteering within Residential Services would be Monday-Friday evenings, weekends, or holidays and special events.
