Lorraine L. Berkland, 88, of Brookings, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, at the Brookings hospital. 

Memorial services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church in rural Volga.  Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.  Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Lorraine Louise Eberlein was born on Oct. 28, 1928, to Frank and Gladys (Messerschmidt) Eberlein at a farmhouse in Aurora Township. In 1929, the family moved to a farm northwest of Brookings.  She attended rural school District No. 2 through grade eight and graduated from Volga High School in 1946.  She then attended Sioux Falls College for six weeks, earning her elementary teacher certificate.  She taught rural schools for three and a half years.  

 Lorraine married Edwin Berkland on June 5, 1949, at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, rural Volga.  They farmed northwest of White for one year and then moved to a farm west of Volga.  In 1956, they purchased a farm south of Volga and lived there until the fall of 2009, when they moved into Brookings.  They spent many winters in Donna, Texas, coming back home every December to spend Christmas with the family.  Edwin died in 2013.

Lorraine was a member of the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, where she belonged to the Ladies Aid and Circle and taught Sunday school, she was a 4-H Leader for 10 years.  She was a member of the Do & Learn Extension Club and the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary and served as a Hospital Volunteer.  She liked puzzles, embroidery, cross stitch, sewed quilts for family members, and helped make many quilts for Lutheran World Relief along with other missions.  Lorraine enjoyed her family the most.

She is survived by her children, Harold (Linda) Berkland of Sioux Falls, Dale (Cheryl) Berkland of Brookings, Gladys (Doug) Kuipers of Platte, Glen (Susan Stryker) Berkland of Rogers, Minnesota, Phyllis (Mark) Pates of Volga, Alice (Andre) Kub of Rochester, Minnesota, Virgil (Judy) Berkland of Fairmont, Minnesota, and Jane (Gene) Palmer of Sioux Falls; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four step-grandsons; nine step-great- grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin (Rudella) Eberlein of Betten Dorf, Iowa, and Delvin (Athene) Eberlein of EauClaire, Wisconsin and her sisters-in-law, Pearl Eberlein of Eugene, Oregon, Marlys Berkland of Brookings, Phyllis Berkland of Sioux Falls, Verna (Russ) Cochren of Rapid City and Clara (Jim) Hanson of Buffalo, Minnesota.

 She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Russell; her great grandson, Easton Fugere; two brothers, Alvin and Calvin (Caroline) Eberlein and three sisters, Fern (Randall) Otteson, Lavada (Stanley) Schlotman and Joyce Eberlein.
