Lorraine I. Gries, 91, of Brookings, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at the United Living Community, Brookings.
Funeral Services have been set for 12 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2019, at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Services on Monday, July 29, 2019 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings. Family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to Fairview Cemetery, Aurora in memory of Lorraine.
Lorraine I. Hendricks was born on November 23, 1927, in Brookings the daughter of Paul and Roxie (Justice) Hendricks.
Lorraine received her education in Aurora and was a graduate of the Aurora High School.
She was united in marriage to Herbert Gries on Feb. 14, 1946, in Aurora. They lived in Pierre, Rapid City and Brookings before residing in Elkton. In 1955, they owned and operated the Red Owl Grocery Store which later became Jack and Jill until a fire destroyed the building in 1974.
Lorraine later worked at the Elkton COOP as a bookkeeper. She also worked at the Elkton Lounge and Bar. Herbert died on July 29, 2005, in Sioux Falls.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Aurora. She enjoyed fishing and gardening, and especially spending time with her family.
She was a life member of the Elkton VFW Auxillary.
Lorraine enjoyed playing cards with her family, grandchildren and friends.
Lorraine is survived by her children, James (Linda) Gries of Sioux Falls, Janice (Joe) Halek of Champlin, MN, Jody (Steve) Bauer of Brookings, Joyce DeBoer of Brooklyn Park, MN and John Gries of Elkton; her grandchildren, Tom (Patricia) Gries of Minneapolis, MN, Jaime Gries of Sioux Falls, Tammy (Rob) Michaletz of Andover, MN, Eric (Jessi) Risch of Andover, MN, Kristi (Tom) Richter of Brookings, Ryan (Jen) Bauer of Brookings, Jarrid (Mandy) DeBoer of Mitchell, SD, Brittany Gries of Blaine, MN and Kelsey Gries of Blaine, MN; great grandchildren, Colin and Camryn Bernard, Madelyn Michaletz, Adison, Davis and Logan Risch, Matthew Tietjen, Talon and Taryn Richter, Kyle, Will, and Jase Bauer, Tessa, Tate and Taya DeBoer, Anna Gries, Hannah and Brady Southwick and Jaxon Gries; one brother, Rolland (Shirley) Hendricks of Olathe, KS; two sisters, Marjorie Snyder of Belle Fourche, SD and Mary (Darrell) DeJong of Glyndon, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert died July 29, 2005, Sioux Falls; sisters, Vada, Norma, Fern; one brother, Glen and one grandson, Jesse.
