Lucas leads Cossacks past Fliers 26-6

VOLGA – Daymein Lucas ran the ball 39 times for 261 yards and three touchdowns as Sioux Valley defeated Flandreau 26-6 in high school football action Friday night.

The senior got things going with a 12-yard rumble up the middle on fourth-and-2 late in the first quarter.

Lucas added a 5-yard scoring run up the middle at the 8:49 mark of the second. Brennan Stoltenberg’s PAT kick made it 13-0.

Later in the second, Noah Puetz hit Jaxton Schiller on a slant for a 5-yard TD. Stoltenberg’s kick pushed the margin to 20-0 with 4:43 to play in the half.

Lucas tacked on a 1-yard plunge with 7:43 left in the third to give the Cossacks a 26-0 lead.

Sioux Valley hadn’t allow any points for eight-plus quarters dating back to its season opener, before the Fliers broke through in the final stanza.

Nate Kneebone had a 21-yard touchdown catch from Michael Witte with 7:26 left to provide for the final margin.

The Cossacks finished with 370 rushing yards, and the Fliers had 142.

Stoltenberg paced Sioux Valley with eight tackles. Jake Schneider, Connor Logan, Lane VanderWal and Tyler Schwartz added seven stops apiece.

Witte ran for 70 yards and threw for 55 for Flandreau.

Matt Pauley came up with 18 tackles, while Brendan Ten Eyck, Kyle Johnson and Braden Peters had seven apiece.

Sioux Valley (3-0), which was coming off an open week, plays host to Sioux Falls Christian for Homecoming on Friday. Flandreau (0-3) heads to Mt. Vernon/Plankinton.

• Arlington/Lake Preston 42, Elkton-Lake Benton 14

ELKTON – Devon Heuer had another big game and the Badgers pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Elks 20-0, to record the Dakota Valley Conference win.

Heuer ran for 190 yards and five touchdowns.

Heuer scored on a 2-yard run late in the first quarter to give ALP a 6-0 lead.

He added TD runs of 26 and 8 yards in the second. He ran in the two-point conversion following the first score and then hit Byron Bumann on the second to give the Badgers a 22-0 halftime advantage.

ELB rallied back after halftime behind Devin Sopko, who finished the game with 134 rushing yards.

He scored on a 7-yard run and Caleb Goertz hit Hunter Nielson for the two-pointer to get the Elks on the board at the 8:04 mark of the third.

Sopko’s 54-yard scoring dash cut the deficit to 22-14 with 1:55 to go in the third.

Heuer had a 7-yard TD run with 11:49 remaining in the game and added a 3-yarder with 9:33 left to give ALP some breathing room.

Gavin Holland returned a punt 56 yards to paydirt with 4:00 showing on the clock. Heuer and Bumann hooked up for the conversion to provide for the final margin.

Holland ran for 77 yards.

Goertz added 54 yards for the Elks.

Bryson Sik paced the ELB defense with nine tackles and Sopko added seven.

Through four games for the undefeated Badgers (4-0), Heuer, a junior, has rushed for 620 yards and 14 scores. He’s added six TD tosses.

Arlington/Lake Preston plays host to Oldham-Ramona/ Rutland in Arlington and Elkton-Lake Benton (1-2) heads to Deubrook Area next week.

• Colman-Egan 48, Deubrook Area 14

COLMAN – The Hawks built a 40-0 halftime lead to cruise past Deubrook Area, 48-14, in Dakota Valley Conference football action.

Kade Groos rushed for 117 yards on four carries with two scores as Colman-Egan racked up 251 rushing yards.

Bodee Groos carried 7 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns to go along with a 4-of-6 passing performance for 63 yards as Chase Hemmer pulled in two passes for 21 yards and Nate Tolley had one catch for 30.

Keith Crittenden also scored twice while picking up 47 yards on nine touches while Trey McKnight carried once for 16 yards.

Kade Groos also led the defense with eight stops while Alec Landis and Hemmer each had six tackles.

Crittenden had five tackles and Sheldon Anderson picked off a pass.

For the Dolphins, Cody Bauman completed 4-of-12 attempts for 52 yards passing while Clayton Koppatschek earned 67 yards on two carries.

Trace Vierhuf added 29 yards on 16 rushes as Deubrook Area finished with 153 yards on 35 carries.

On Friday, the Hawks, 3-0 on the season, play host to Estelline, while the 0-3 Dolphins welcome Elkton-Lake Benton.

• De Smet 58, Estelline 14

Zach Wolkow, Cade Birkel and Gage Gruenhagen each scored two rushing touchdowns and Alec Dobson added a 1-yard rush for the Bulldogs, who evened their record at 2-2.

Wolkow scored on runs of 2 and 26 yards; Birkel scored from 18 and 22 yards out; and Gruenhagen added TD runs of 35 and 56 yards.

The Redmen rushed for 205 yards and added 49 passing yards as Marcis Hausman threw two TD passes and picked up 154 rushing yards.

Harrison Wegner caught two TD passes and had five tackles.

Hausman led the defense with 11 stops as Jake Goodfellow finished with six tackles; forced a fumble; and recovered a De Smet fumble.

Estelline, 0-4, travels to Colman-Egan on Friday while the Bulldogs take on St. Mary in Dell Rapids.

• Castlewood 53, Oldham/Ramona-Rutland 16

The Warriors moved to 4-0 with the thrashing of the Raiders on Friday night.

For ORR, Jamus Brown rushed six times for 40 yards and one touchdown while Casey Renaas picked up 81 yards on nine carries.

Brown completed 18-of-26 passes for 374 yards with one touchdown toss to Hunter Breske.

The Raiders, 1-3, take on Arlington-Lake Preston in Arlington on Friday while Castlewood has a bye week.
