VOLGA – Saturday was a lucky night for employees of the Lucky Dog Bar & Grill in Volga.
Nineteen people gathered for a belated Christmas party at the Lucky Dog are the winners of a $50,000 Powerball prize, Lucky Dog bartender Angie Tesch confirmed Monday. The ticket was sold at Casey’s General Store on Hansina Avenue in Volga.
Tesch said the employees all threw in a couple of bucks apiece Saturday to purchase $40 worth of tickets at the convenience store across the street about an hour before the drawing.
Tesch said she sat down to check the tickets about 15 minutes after the drawing, and they knew they were winners before 11 p.m. Saturday. At first the group thought they were taking home $10,000, but a double check clarified that it was actually a $50,000 prize.
“That was a nice surprise, to add $40,000 to it. I was a little in shock,” said Tesch, who was about to head to Sioux Falls Monday afternoon to turn in the winning ticket at the South Dakota Lottery office.
This is the first time the employees have pooled their money for lottery tickets, and there was one employee insisting they do so, Tesch said. “And we listened.”
