Lynsey Stevens posts two top-eight finishes at Class A state meet

SPEARFISH – Sioux Valley seniors Lynsey Stevens and Nikole Ziegler led the local contingent at the Class A State Girls’ Track and Field Meet on Friday at Lyle Hare Stadium.

Stevens cleared 5 feet, 1 inch to place fourth in the high jump and finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 34-4.

Ziegler also cleared 5-1 in the high jump en route to a third-place showing. She was 12th in the triple jump at 33-9.

Stevens and Ziegler are both competing the long jump today. Flandreau’s 4x800-meter relay team of Madeline Hursey, Libby Hursey, Mara Lunday and Hannah Parsley crossed in 10 minutes, 15.73 seconds to take eighth.

Black Hills Conference athletes rewrote the record book on Day 1.

St. Thomas More’s Haleigh Timmer broke the meet record in the 800 meters in 2:13.61, denying Custer’s Tori Glazier a chance for a career sweep in the event. Glazier, an SDSU commit and the five-time defending champion, was runner-up in 2:16.03.

Belle Fourche’s Shayla Howell broke the meet record in the triple jump (39-0 1/4) and Lead-Deadwood’s Carolyn Groeger did the same in the pole vault (11-10).

The Cavaliers lead the team race with 31 points. Custer (26.5) is second and Beresford (24) third.

The meet concludes today at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.

Boys

SPEARFISH – Sioux Valley’s Lane VanderWal took ninth in the triple jump at the Class A State Boys’ Track and Field Meet on Friday at Lyle Hare Stadium.

He posted a mark of 42 feet, 2 1/2 inches and missed a spot on the podium by just half an inch.

Brennan Stoltenberg was 12th in the discus (122-10) and 14th in the shot put (43-4).

Kelton Vincent finished 21st in the 3,200 in 11 minutes, 42.28 seconds.

Ryan Schuster, Trevor Olson, Jaxton Schiller and Max Nielson ended up 13th in the medley relay preliminaries with a 3:54.3 clocking.

Lennox (33) holds a slight lead over West Central (30) in the team race, while St. Thomas More (26.5) is third.

The meet concludes today at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.
