Lynx beat Warriors in 11AAA final

VERMILLION – Brandon Valley beat three-time defending champion Sioux Falls Washington 28-22 in the Class 11AAA football title game Saturday night at the DakotaDome.

It marked the Lynx’s first state championship since 1998.

Thomas Scholten, the Joe Robbie MVP, went 18-of-22 for 213 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses.

Outstanding Back Carter Olthoff had eight catches for 134 yards and a score.

Tate Johnson ran for 144 yards and a TD. Jesse Steffel also found the end zone on the ground, while Cole Siegfried tallied a TD catch.

BV’s Jack Harvison was Outstanding Lineman.

The Lynx led 14-0 after a quarter, 14-13 at halftime and 28-13 through three.

The Warriors’ Tupak Kpeayeh, then state record-holder in both rushing yards and touchdowns, ended up with 108 yards and one TD.

Jayden Johannsen finished 18-of-27 for 238 yards with two TDs and a pair of INTs. Jhett Andersen, who had 94 yards, and Gabe Person both had touchdown catches.

Third-seeded Brandon Valley finished the season with a 10-2 record and No. 4 Sioux Falls Washington ended up 9-3.

Notes: Brandon Valley is 7-4 in finals, including 1-1 at the 11AAA level. The Lynx won 11A titles in 1984, 1985 and 1988; and 11AA crowns in 1989, 1990 and 1998. They were runners-up in 11AA in 1995, 1997 and 2012; and in 11AAA in 2016 (a 41-31 loss to the Warriors). … Sioux Falls Washington is 6-6 in finals, including 3-1 at the 11AAA level. The Warriors won 11AA titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012, before tallying an 11AAA three-peat from 2015-17. They were runners-up in 11AA in 1986, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2011.
