Lynx sweep Bobcats, win girls’ game 64-31

BROOKINGS – Brandon Valley defeated the Bobcats 64-31 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball game Thursday evening at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

Johanna Miller sandwiched 3-pointers around a Kennedy Schafer long ball to put Brookings ahead 9-3 less than 3 minutes into the contest.

However, the Lynx rallied to take a 17-13 lead after a quarter and were up 32-21 at halftime.

Eleven of the Bobcats’ 33 turnovers came in the third quarter as Brandon Valley pushed the margin to 49-27.

“We’re in Game 11-12 right now – we can’t continue to make the same mistakes we’re making over and over,” said BHS coach Mitch McLagan. “We’re trying to put kids in better positions to not commit turnovers. We need to find a core of players that we can put on the floor that are going to take care of it.

“We just don’t value the basketball and it’s leading to a lot of points. I don’t think that team is that much better than we are but if we turn the ball over 33 times, we’re going to have a hard time in any game we play.”

Mara Schaap scored 15 points and Hilary Behrens added 13 on combined 9-of-14 shooting for Brandon Valley (5-5), which came up with 22 steals – including four apiece from Behrens and Kylie Foss.

The Lynx shot 47.8 percent from the field and the Bobcats ended up at 26.2 percent.

Ainsley Shelsta posted a double-double of 12 points – on 5-of-8 shooting – and 12 rebounds in 19 1/2 minutes off the bench for the home squad.

Miller totaled six points and grabbed 12 boards. Landree Wilson came up with five steals.

The Bobcats (0-11) lost 57-43 at Brandon Valley in the first meeting Jan. 10.

Brookings plays a doubleheader at Fairmont, Minnesota, on Saturday. The girls’ game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Bobcat boys fell 75-34 at Brandon Valley on Thursday.
