Man accused of assault over parking stall

BROOKINGS – A Volga man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a woman for parking a vehicle in a stall for motorcycles, according to the Brookings Police.

The assault was reported by a 34-year-old woman from Watertown at 5:30 p.m. Friday and occurred at Fourth Street and Main Avenue in downtown Brookings, Lt. Derrick Powers said.

By the time officers arrived, the 35-year-old suspect had left the scene, he said.

“The female had parked in a parking spot that she didn’t realize was designated for motorcycle parking,” Powers said.

“There are some in the downtown area,” he added.

The ones at Third Street, Fourth Street and Fifth Street are located at the end of the blocks and have signs and paint on the road surfaces. There are two slim stalls side-by-side, together about the width of a regular stall, but too short for a vehicle to park in.

“I think that helps so that (motorcylists) can park in those areas and not take up a full stall,” Powers explained.

“As she was getting out of her vehicle, a male approached her, telling her she couldn’t park there and using foul language towards her,” Powers said. “He proceeded to kick the door of her vehicle, which caused it to hit her in her head.

“Then he left. She was able to get a license plate number from the motorcycle, which led to the identification of the individual that did this,” Powers said.

The suspect was located a short time later at his residence by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested for simple assault and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

Officers discovered that a short time before the woman called to report the assault, “he had also called to make a complaint about the vehicle parked in that parking spot, too,” Powers said.
