BROOKINGS – A man resisted arrest – including biting an officer – after he was reported for allegedly stealing from a hotel room, according to the Brookings Police.

The incident was reported at 12:45 p.m. Thursday and occurred at a hotel in the 2500 block of Sixth Street, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

“We were called for an individual that had been staying at the hotel. They were reporting that he was stealing items from the room where he was staying,” Powers said.

Officers made contact with the 36-year-old Brookings man and he became “uncooperative as they attempted to detain him as part of the investigation. Once he was detained, it was found that he had drug paraphernalia on him,” Powers said.

The man continued to resist officers throughout the process, including after he was arrested, he added.

“At one point after he was arrested, he ended up basically slipping the cuffs from behind him to in front of him and was being combative within the patrol car,” Powers said.

“As officers attempted to secure him … so he wouldn’t injure himself or damage anything, he bit one of the officers,” Powers said.

Whether the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be determined at a later time, Powers added.

Items he was accused of taking from the hotel room include a lamp, pillow cases, towels and other things, Powers said.

The man was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center on suspicion of petty theft, because the total value of the items was under $400; possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and simple assault on a law enforcement officer, Powers said.
