BROOKINGS – A Brookings man is facing multiple charges after police allege he led them on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle that started in the city and ended near Arlington Monday night.

The chase started shortly after 8:40 p.m., after a South Dakota State University Police Department tried to initiate a traffic stop, BPD Lt. Derrick Powers said.

Other law enforcement agencies assisted as the driver of a 2006 Chevy HHR traveled at speeds up to 45 mph in Brookings and refused to stop, Power said.

The vehicle eventually made its way to the bypass and west out of town. Powers said that’s when Brookings Police were no longer involved, but UPD officers continued the pursuit.

UPD officers were able to stop the vehicle at the junction of Highways 14 and 81 near Arlington. Its driver, an 18-year-old Brookings man, was arrested.

Powers said the HHR involved in the chase had recently been stolen from the Brookings High School parking lot. The vehicle was unlocked with its keys inside.

The suspect is facing charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal entry of a motor vehicle and grand theft, as well as other counts related to the pursuit.
