Man arrested for aggravated assault

BROOKINGS – A Sioux Falls man was arrested after police say he attempted to strangle a Brookings woman.

The call came in at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday from the 500 block of 15th Street South, Brookings Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

The initial report was that an argument turned physical between the man and woman. When officers were en route, they received word that the man had fled the residence on foot. Officers made contact with the woman and witnesses at the residence, Powers said.

“This started with an argument. During the argument, the male had hit and attempted to strangle the female by placing his hands around her neck. She was able to get free and we were called,” Powers said.

“We were able to locate the male, who had fled, a short distance away,” he said.

Powers said an ambulance was called to the scene to check the woman out, but she was not transported to a hospital.

The man, a 27-year-old Sioux Falls resident, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center. Officers also found out he was wanted on two warrants out of Sioux Falls. Powers did not know what the warrants were for.

“He’ll have to deal with both,” Powers said of the local charges and the warrants.

“The order of it, that’s worked out through the court system. First, he needs to take care of his stuff here. This could be ongoing while he’s taking care of the stuff down in Sioux Falls, too.”
