Man arrested for alleged assault

BROOKINGS – A Mississippi man was arrested on suspicion of assault last week, according to Brookings Police.

The incident was reported at 10:55 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, and occurred in the 500 block of Sunrise Ridge Road, Lt. Marci Gebers said.

Joseph Ellis Jr., 29, of Clinton, Mississippi, was arrested and charged with simple assault, interference with emergency communication and false imprisonment, she said. He was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

“The victim and the arrestee were known to each other,” Gebers said. “Alcohol was a factor.”

“The arrestee hit the victim and pushed the victim to the ground and then took the victim’s cell phone to prevent him from calling 911 and then prevented him from leaving the room,” Gebers said.

The ambulance was not called, she added.
