BROOKINGS – A man was arrested for alleged disorderly conduct after acting erratically and cursing at people in a mall parking lot, according to Brookings Police.

Jeremiah Brown, 26, of Ramona, was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Lt. Marci Gebers said. He was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

The incident took place around 3:38 p.m. Tuesday in the HyVee Gas Station parking lot, Gebers said.

“There was a plain clothes detective who was in an unmarked vehicle who observed a male subject walking from the area of the liquor store towards HyVee Gas,” she said. “He was flailing his arms, talking to himself, just appeared to be very agitated. His behavior was very erratic.

“The detective believed that he may be under the influence of some kind of intoxicant. The detective saw the individual flip a shopping cart over as he approached the HyVee Gas Station,” Gebers said.

Gebers said the detective saw the suspect scream, swear at and flip off a group of high school-aged kids. The detective identified himself and intervened as the suspect aggressively advanced towards the kids, she added, and the suspect was compliant initially.

The suspect pulled away and began to struggle with the detective as he tried to handcuff him, Gebers said.

“There were some bystanders in the area that assisted our detective with placing handcuffs on Jeremiah,” Gebers said.

“When he was screaming profanities, there were several people in the area who had also noticed this, and he had drawn their attention. So there were several witnesses to this incident,” Gebers said.

Alcohol was a factor, she added. The dectective had minor injuries but did not require treatment.
