Maroon go 1-1 on Day 2

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Maroon dropped their opener on Saturday at Erv Huether Field before coming back with a shutout win to cap off the 13U Cubby’s Sports Bar and Grill Tournament.

Maroon fell 9-6 to West Central, but ended the day on a high note with a 17-0 shutout of West Lyon.

On Tuesday, the Bombers travel to Yankton for a doubleheader that begins at noon.

Nathan Lease allowed just two hits and walked two batters while striking out seven to earn the complete-game shutout win on the mound.

Maroon took advantage of five walks to score a run in the first; added three in the second; tacked on one more in the third; and then exploded for 12 in the fourth to end the game via the run rule.

Lease had the big hit in the second, driving in Kellan Aure and Parker Winghart with a single.

In the third, Max Enevoldsen reached on an error, moved to third on two wild pitches; and then, scored on Jackson Eck’s groundout.

In the 12-run fourth, the Bombers sent 16 batters to the plate and used six walks, singles by Lease, Enevoldsen, Aure, Winghart and Justin Cofell, along with two doubles by Carter Wright, to put the game away.

West Central scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break a 6-6 tie and then held Maroon in the bottom of the frame for the win.

The Bombers scored a pair of runs in the first when Aure drew a leadoff walk; stole second; moved to third on Wright’s groundout; and then scored on Cofell’s two-out single. Cofell stole second and scored on Lease’s single for a 2-0 lead.

West Central got one run back in the third and then took a 3-2 lead with two in the fifth.

But Maroon regained the lead with four in the bottom half as Tyson Brandt walked to lead off the frame; stole second and third; and scored on an errant throw to tie the game at 3-3. Aure singled; stole second and then scored on Wright’s two-out single. Andrew Bishop, who was a courtesy runner for Wright, stole second; moved to third on Cofell’s single; and scored on Lease’s two-RBI base hit as Cofell also scored.

Tied at 6-6, West Central took advantage of a walk, a Maroon error and a wild pitch to scrape up three runs in the top of the seventh for the win.

Rocklyn Dauphinias suffered the loss after allowing three runs – one earned – on one hit and two walks in one inning of relief. Cofell gave up six earned runs on 10 hits and a walk with two strikeouts over the first six frames.
