Maroon go 2-1 over the weekend


SIOUX FALLS – The Bombers Maroon won two games on Saturday via the run rule, but dropped a one-run decision on Sunday in the Sioux Falls Tournament to be eliminated.

Maroon downed Moorhead Black, 12-2; beat Pierre, 15-5; before losing 6-5 to Sioux Falls West Navy.

The Bombers, 26-9 on the season, play host to Sioux Falls East 13’s in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Mickelson Field.

 

Sunday’s Game

• S.F. West 6, Brookings 5

The Bombers scored single runs in the first, third and fourth to lead 3-1 through 3 1/2 frames before West plated two runs in the fourth to tie the game. After Maroon pushed across two more in the fifth, Navy then tallied three in the bottom to take the lead for good.

Caden Krogman provided the spark in the first inning with a one-out single. After stealing second, he scored on Jake Ammann’s double.

In the third, Cole McKeown singled; stole second and third before scoring on an error on the throw to third.

Talon Richter singled to open the third; stole second; advanced to third on an error on a pickoff attempt and then scored after getting into a rundown on a ball hit back to the pitcher by Josh Devine.

In the fifth, McKeown reached base on an error, advancing to second on the play. Krogman singled to left as McKeown advanced to third, before Krogman stole second without a play. Ammann put the ball in play as both McKeown and Krogman both scored on the ensuing error as Brookings took a 5-3 lead.

Ashton Witte tossed the first four innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Devine relieved in the fifth and allowed three runs – one earned – on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Saturday’s Games

• Brookings 15, Pierre 5

All 20 runs of the game were scored in the last three innings, but it was Maroon’s seven-run sixth that ended the game early via the run rule.

Lincoln Hardin tossed a six-hit complete game to earn the win on the mound as he struck out six and gave up just four earned runs.

Five of Maroon’s nine hits went for extra bases as Brock Longville and Trey Svennes went deep; Zach Moe hit a triple; and McKeown and Payton Theodosopoulos both doubled.

Svennes, Longville, Theodosopoulos and Witte drove in two runs apiece as Hardin helped himself out with a single and RBI. McKeown and Sam Hardin singled and drove in a run while Jack Even singled.

McKeown set the tone early with a leadoff triple before scoring on Svennes’ RBI-double as Maroon scored single runs in each of the first four innings.

In the second, Sam Hardin drew a walk, stole second, advanced to third on Moe’s ground out; and then tagged up and scored on Richter’s fly out.

Witte walked, stole second and moved to third on an error before Svennes knocked him in with a triple in the third inning.

In the fourth, Moe hit a one-out solo shot before Maroon came up empty in the fifth.

Svennes doubled to lead off the fifth; and then scored on Ammann’s double. Krogman reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second before Sam Hardin walked. Moe singled to left and both Krogman and Hardin scored when the left fielder misplayed the ball.

In the sixth, McKeown took one for the team; stole second; and then scored on Svennes’ fourth hit of the game. Svennes stole second and ended up scoring on two wild pitches as Ammann drew a walk. Ammann stole second and advanced to third on an error before scoring on Krogman’s infield single.

Krogman stole second and then Sam Hardin walked. Krogman moved to third on a passed ball and Hardin went to second on the next pitch. Both scored on Richter’s two-RBI single to make it 12-0.

Moorhead finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs as Svennes closed out the complete game on the mound after allowing three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
