Maroon romp to 5-inning win

SIOUX FALLS – The Bombers Maroon made short work of Sioux Falls East Purple in Saturday’s opening matchup of the Sioux Falls Tournament.

The Bombers banged out 12 hits – five for extra bases – one the way to a 13-2 five-inning romp over Purple at Harmodon Field.

Maroon, 24-8 on the season, take on Moorhead Black at 9 a.m. on Saturday; face Pierre at 2 p.m.; and then battle S.F. West Navy at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Caden Krogman and Ashton Witte hit back-to-back doubles to open the game as Krogman scored on Witte’s double before Witte scored on Trey Svenne’s ensuing single as the Bombers led 2-0 after one.

Brock Longville led off the second with a double; moved to third on Talon Richter’s ground out; and then scored on a wild pitch. Jack Even drew a two-out walk; moved to second on a wild pitch; and then scored on an error as Maroon went up 4-0 through two.

Brookings had four hits – which included a triple by Payton Theodosopoulos – and several Sioux Falls miscues to score six runs in the fourth inning for 10-0 lead.

Longville hit a triple to lead off the fifth before Richter walked and went to second without a play. Josh Devine’s single plated both to make it 12-0. Theodosopoulos reached on a fielder’s choice; advanced to second on Krogman’s base hit; and scored when both Witte and Svennes took one for the team for the 13-run edge.

Purple finally plated a run against Sam Hardin, who tossed a four-hit complete game for the win, in the bottom of the fifth. A leadoff double, followed by a two-base error and two straight groundouts led to two unearned runs, but Hardin struck out the final batter for his fourth strikeout of the game.
