She was a graduate of the Gilbert High School, and continued her education at Eveleth Junior College in Eveleth, Minnesota, for one year, where she met Louis Skubic, before moving to Chicago.

While in Chicago, she and Louis kept in contact with each other through letters while he was in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.  During this time, she worked as a secretary for Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and for Proctor and Johnson, a sales office for ADM.  After the war, Louis returned to the states and they were married in Chicago on June 1, 1946.  In the fall of that year, they moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where Louis continued his education. Later they moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where Louis taught at the branch college of Michigan Tech for seven years.

In 1954, they moved to Brookings where Louis taught at South Dakota State University until his retirement in 1985.  Mary Ann was employed as a secretary, part time, while attending SDSU.  She worked as secretary in the state Social Service Office of Community Services and office on Aging, the National Weather Service Office for State Climatology and for the Horticulture Extension Department.

Mary Ann was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish and involved in church and charitable activities including choir, teaching religious education and other activities, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Schoenstatt Sisters of Charity.  She enjoyed her family, dancing especially at polka festivals, traveling, playing cards, gardening, sewing and playing music for the enjoyment of others and for special events, including residents of nursing homes.  She played the drums with her husband who played the buttonbox accordion.
