Mary Jayne Merrigan - Vermillion

Mary Jayne Merrigan, 83, of Vermillion, died on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, at Sanford Vermillion Care Center where she was a resident for eight months.

 Mary Jayne was born on Oct. 11, 1934, in Vermillion, the daughter of Bernard and Sarah (Larsen) Walz. She spent her childhood in Vermillion and attended Vermillion schools. Jayne graduated from high school in 1952 where she played trumpet in the band and went on to the University. 

In 1954, she was united in marriage to Vernon Merrigan, to this union, five daughters were born, Maureen, Kathleen, Kimberly, Michele, and Shawn. In 1962 they moved to Livermore, California where she worked at the VA Hospital for 25 years before retiring. She relocated back to Vermillion in 1996 for a while before she made her home in Estelline and Brookings for the next 15 years. It was not too long ago before she returned back to her hometown in Vermillion.

She was a loving mother who taught us all how to cook. She liked to play cards, bingo, and loved her politics. She was a homemaker in earlier years raising her five daughters and became a professional business woman in later years.

She will be missed by her daughters and their families; Maureen Troxell of Manteca, California, Kathy (Larry) Duysen of Poterville, California, Kim (John) Saulter of Pinedale, Wyoming, Michele “Shelly” (Bob) Adams of Traverse City, Michigan, and Shawn Merrigan of Sioux Falls; her sister, Patricia Berglund of Sioux City, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Donald, a twin sister, Mary Jeanne Walz.

A Funeral Mass will be at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 a.m. Private family burial of ashes will be later in the day in her family plot in Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion.

The family wanted to thank the nurses and caregivers at Sanford Care Center for taking wonderful care of Jayne.

The Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion has been entrusted with the services.
