Maynard A. Thompson, 86, of Brookings, SD, died on Monday, November 24, 2020 in Riverside Nursing Home in Flandreau, SD.  Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at Midway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Colman, SD.  The family invites you to the graveside but requests that everyone stay in their vehicle during the service.  Rude’s Funeral Home will livestream the service on Rude’s Funeral Home’s Facebook page.
Maynard A. Thompson was born to Mae (Elverud) and J. Arthur Thompson on June 24, 1934, in Volga, SD the second of four sons.
He attended school at McCurdy Country School #54 and Rutland, graduating from Rutland High School in 1953. In his early 20s he joined the Army. He proudly served for three years in Germany and was recognized as an expert marksman. One summer night he met a lady named Dorothy at the Lake Campbell Roller Skating Rink. They were married on May 27, 1961, at the Sinai Lutheran Church in Sinai, S.D. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three children (Kevin, Steven and Jodi). Maynard farmed for many years and later in life he worked at Advance in Brookings, SD. Maynard was a lifelong member of Midway Lutheran Church in rural Colman, SD.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Dorothy of Brookings, S.D.,his son Kevin (Mary) of Sioux Falls, S.D., his son Steven (Sonia) of Brighton, Colo.,his daughter Jodi (Dennis) Fryer of Brookings, S.D., two grandsons, three great-grandchildren, his brother Wayne (Lois) of Brookings, S.D., his brother Verle (Audrey) of Brookings, S.D., sister-in-law (his brother Dale’s wife) Barbara of Brookings, S.D., his aunt Clarice Elverud of Brookings, S.D., and a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Maynard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dale.
