MCM beats Flandreau in BEC tourney title game; Cossacks take third

VOLGA – McCook Central/Montrose (14-1) beat Flandreau 61-39 in the Big East Conference Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game Saturday night at the Cossack Center.

Morgan Koepsell totaled nine points, 18 rebounds and nine assists. Jacy Pulse scored 15 points and Natalie Gottlob 10. McKenna Kranz added six points, five steals and four dimes.

The Fighting Cougars were up 11-6 after a quarter, 30-17 at halftime and 48-26 through three.

MCM shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and Flandreau ended up at 26.3 percent (15-of-57).

The Fliers’ Marianna Pavlis totaled 10 points. Mara Lunday added nine markers, Kathy Parsley six, and Hannah Parsley and Tishara Hardy five apiece.

Flandreau (10-5) is host to Sioux Valley on Friday.

Third place

 Sioux Valley 62, Parker 23

Carly Granum buried nine 3-pointers for 27 points, and Miakken Vincent and Lynsey Stevens both had big games as the Cossacks flew past the Pheasants.

Vincent tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Stevens totaled nine points, nine boards and eight assists. Cassie Rawden contributed seven points and eight dimes, while Rachel Miller corralled nine rebounds.

Sioux Valley was up 24-8 after a quarter, 37-13 at halftime and 49-19 through three.

“Our ball movement got us rolling; ball movement with shooters,” said Cossack coach Jamie Granum. “Our third game in two days, you sometimes don’t know as a coach how we’re going to come out, so we talked about being aware of how flat teams can get beat. And the way we’re con-figured, we can’t come out flat. We need to bring it every single night with some energy and some attitude and some effort. That’s kind of what we talked about and I thought we came out deliv-ered.”

The Cossacks went 16-of-37 from long range. They shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) overall.

Parker managed just 14.8 percent (8-of-54) shooting.

Raelin Jurgens led the Pheasants (4-9) with eight markers.

Sioux Valley (10-5) is host to De Smet on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Fifth place

 Garretson 62, Howard 58

Lizzie Olson posted a double-double of 18 points and 15 boards, Kyley Greenhoff added 14 points and Aftyn Heitkamp scored 12 points to lead the Blue Dragons (6-7) past the Tigers (7-7).

Howard led 16-11 after a quarter and 28-24 at halftime, before Garretson went up 46-36 entering the fourth.

The Tigers’ Hilary Albrecht dropped in 25 points. Citori Rentz had a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards. Josie Erickson added 10 markers.

n Chester Area 47, Baltic 23

The Flyers (7-9) built a 29-20 lead through three quarters before outscoring the Lady Bulldogs (3-12) 18-3 in the fourth to post the victory.

Makenna Larson had 17 points and Jennilee Hoyer 13.

Jayda Tidemann had nine points for Baltic, which shot 17.9 percent (7-of-39).
